Now What?
Boy. What a day, huh? Who would have thought that Prince Fielder would be a Tiger. I for one, much like the rest of us, spent the first couple of hours freaking out and jumping on things that looking back on it, probably shouldn't have held my weight. Anyway, with the Tigers still having one more major hole in the rotation, what should we do? I think that a rumor that was up a few weeks ago is something that we should look into. Yep, I'm talking about Matt Garza.
I think that the next five to seven years are our best chance to win multiple World Series'. We have a young team and a powerhouse lineup. As is, the rotation is pretty good, but why not make it great? A couple day ago, I would not have done a trade involving Castellanos and Turner for Garza, but now I feel different. On top of that, Castellanos is now blocked. Cabrera looks to be moving to third. So what do you do with him? You trade him for a pitcher. And as far as Turner goes, Garza is what you HOPE he becomes. There are no guarantees with him. Garza, on the other hand, put up a WAR of 5.0 at Wrigley Field last year. That's pretty impresive. If you put him in Comerica, he could flourish. We would be talking about, perhaps, the best team in the AL. It would deffinitley match up with the Angels, Rangers, Yankees, and Red Sox. Just take a look at the rotation with Fielder and Garza. Note that this would be with Victor on account of him only being out a year at the longest. He could very well be back by mid to late August, as evident with the time frame of other players with the same injury and surgery.
1. Austin Jackson CF
2. Brennan Boesch RF
3. Miguel Cabrera 3B
4. Prince Fielder 1B
5. Victor Martinez DH
6. Delmon Young LF
7. Jhonny Peralta SS
8. Alex Avila C
9. Ramon Santiago 2B
2. Doug Fister
3. Matt Garza
4. Max Scherezer
And then if any of these starters run into trouble, you have a solid bullpen that can go to Phil Coke, Octavio Dotel, Joaquin Benoit, and Jose Valverde. So all that you really need is 5 innings from each starter. And for anyone who thinks that money is an issue, I feel that if Illitch is willing to come this far, I don't think he will have much trouble going a little bit farther.

I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't want Garza
Can we get a less significant person whose slightly better than Penny? Cuz I’d be completely fine with that…
Oh, but your lineup looks awesome. Can’t wait to see it in person in 2013 :D

What don't you like about him?
I think that we should go all in and get Garza. He is an ace on most teams and a very underrated pitcher.
He's definitely not an ace nor is he underrated
He’s a solid 2-3, depending on the roster. He’s coming off of a career-best season against the NL Central, so his price tag is going to be astronomical. Before that, he had never posted an FIP or xFIP below 4 in any of his five seasons in the AL. Somehow, he was able to outperform his peripherals in three of those seasons, but I don’t see it happening on a continuous basis.

What I don't like about Garza
is the cost. Not just in salary, where he submitted a request for $ 12 million to the arbitration panel, but in prospects. He’d cost us Jacob Turner and another top prospect. Turner, Smyly and $ 20 mil or so for two years is too much in my book. Love to have Garza on the roster, though.

You're not the only one
He would cost way too much, especially with Theo calling the shots now.

I don't think the 5th starter is a major hole.
It’s our only weak rotation spot, yes, but we got several candidates that can start. Turner, Below, Wilk, Smyly, Crosby, Oliver, or even Coke and Pauley. I think we should let our farm system pay it’s dividends.
2nd, you don’t trade Castellanos for a pitcher. We got a stockpile of pitchers. What we need are hitters. Young cost controlled hitters, so that we can afford Fielder, Cabrera, and Verlander. Castellanos can be moved to outfield where he would be needed. It would give him some versatility. The dude is the next Ryan Braun. You don’t trade guys like that.
Why don't we just make an offer on Edwin Jackson?
Has anyone made an offer on Edwin Jackson yet?

I can see it now

There is talk he might take a one year deal.
I would over pay Jackson on a one year deal if he would take it.That would give Turner and company time to earn a starting spot in the rotation.
I find that hard to believe
I think he’s coming off a pretty good year for him. He’s had some pretty inconsistent seasons.

Right
And the market is substantially stronger with SP for next year.

Castellanos isn't really super-blocked
His ETA and VMart’s contract expiration line up pretty well.
If NC lights it up for the next two years, we need to make decisions. However, if we give him a year per level, he plays 2012 in Lakeland, 2013 in Erie, and 2014 in Toledo. VMart leaves after 2014, Cabrera moves to DH, and NC hits 3B in Detroit.
Granted, strong prospects might move a little quicker than this, but it still puts him in Detroit at the age of 23ish.

Turner is still cheap and under club control until at least 2018
Garza already makes $6M hits free agency in 2014. Although given what just happened, I’m not even sure how to talk about money and the Tigers right now.
I'm warming to Turner in the rotation

Agreed
I’d like to see 8 good starts in Toledo before promoting.

I'd rather trade Fielder than Cabrera

I disagree in a couple years i would trade Cabrera.
We have Fielder signed to a long term contract. And Cabrera would bring a big haul in prospects for us to rebuild or to continue to keep winning.Cabrera is one of the best but you have to do whats in the best interest of the team.
Uh
I really don’t see why we need to trade either.
Delmon Young on the other hand, has got to go. His value is relatively high, and we can get ourselves an infielder or just salary relief that we can use to sign someone like Cespedes.
It probably won’t happen, but I still don’t think the off-season is done yet.
Count me out on Cespedes
I was all for him at first, but his 5 for 35, 10 K performance this past week or two has been enough for me… let Miami overpay for him.

Didn't he start out like 1 for 16?
He’s been better lately. Regardless, you might want to read a scouting report instead of looking at 35 rusty AB’s.

I could hug you right now
People are getting that small sample sizes aren’t suitable for evaluating players. This makes me so happy…

Cespedes is a good player right now..
in the Dominican league.
The cultural difference can be huge. That alone can be enough to change a person. (ex. Daisuke Matsuzaka) Look at the players that played in other leagues for awhile before appearing in the major leagues, more times than not they turn out to be flops. And pretty much every time there is a crowd speculating that this particular individual has what it takes.
Someone who has come out of the Dominican league to be a success: Kendry Morales. It took him four years in the minors to be ready for MLB. At the time he was 6 years younger than Cespedes, plenty of room to grow. If Cespedes needs time to adapt, he could be wasting part of his prime in a minor league system. (for a lot of money)
One last argument why Cespedes would not fit on the Tigers, and David, from looks of it you probably don’t want to hear it – His performance in the last month, which has been awful. This tells me one thing, because I know he’s good, that he is burn’t out. He played all last year and than to keep his performance visible to teams in America he decided to play in a lesser skilled league. When he is doing that poor in a bad league it says either one of two things- 1. he is not a good player, 2. he is tired. He may be good for half of this year.
The Tigers don’t need a bat, they really don’t need anything. If they could use anything at all, it would be another reliever. It never hurts to have depth in that field.
If, and when, he comes to the states, look for Cespedes to have an average year at best. He looks like he will be good, but that will be in 2013.
His performance in the last month could also be a bad month
It happens.

so you'd have signed Chris Shelton to a $100mm deal then?
He had a hell of a first month.

Zero surplus value
His contract is 6.5M…I doubt he’d get that as a free agent. He’d be worth about what we got him for.
The other sports are just sports. Baseball is a love. ~Bryant Gumbel, 1981
Really?
I figure he’s as good as any DH out there now.
by metatron5369 on Jan 25, 2012 7:18 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
He might not be as good as Johnny Damon
And Damon will probably get about 3M.
Willingham got 7M per season and is better on both sides of the ball than Delmon.
Thome is still a pretty solid bat and signed for about 1.5.
Delmon isn’t worth 6.5M as a LF or DH. If he as a good year, however…

How about a SS???
Why not really shake it up defensively…
- Slide Perralta to 2B…less concern on his range
Not concerned about upsetting him…Cabrera moved.
- Get SS w/better range / speed…for Raburn or Young (remaining one DH’s)
Help Cabrera at 3B and take RR or DY off the field.
- 3B: Inge v LH (Cabrera at 1B and Fielder at DH), Cabrera v RH/Interleague
Reduces Inges
Do not trade Cabrera/Fielder/Castellanos/Turner…period.
Wait til the deadline for the 5th Starter…if Turner/Smyly/Crosby/Etc are not ready.
Whoa
Fire Inge
Promote Iorg
It’s so similar it’s eerie.
