Bless You Boys Podcast 28: Prince Fielder and Nattering Nabobs of Negativity
We at Bless You Boys have said all through the off season we'll record podcasts whenever there's breaking news. Former Brewers 1st baseman Prince Fielder signing with the Detroit Tigers qualifies, you think? So we got the gang back together and started recording!
BYB Podcast 28 has a running time of 1:01, and features Kurt Mensching, Allison Hagen, Rob Rogacki and Al Beaton.
Topics discussed:
- Prince Fielder? For real?
- Was Tigers owner Mike Ilitch the driving force behind this signing?
- Is this contract all due to Victor Martinez tearing his ACL?
- Have the Tigers become prohibitive favorites in the AL Central?
- It's World Series or bust for Ilitch.
- Jim Leyland has to bat Miguel Cabrera 3rd and Fielder 4th, right?
- Where does Cabrera best fit in the field, if at all?
- If Cabrera moves to 3rd base, what happens to Brandon Inge and Don Kelly?
- A year from now, the Tigers will have Cabrera, Martinez and Fielder on the roster. Who plays where? Could we see a trade?
- If not Cabrera, who will be the DH?
- You may want to ignore them, but there are some parallels to 2008.
- The Cecil Fielder factor.
- Can the Tigers afford 3 players making $20 million plus a season?
- Is it too early to worry about future contracts and roster fallout 4-5 years down the line?
- Let's not forget the Tigers still need a starting pitcher, and possibly a DH.
- Is Yoenis Cespedes still an option?
- We’re already seeing a backlash. Some pundits and bloggers say the deal is too long, too expensive, Scott Boras is evil, Fielder won’t age well, the Tigers are over loaded with 1B/DH types, they should have signed a starter and a table setter, and so on. Do they have a point?
Brandon Inge mentions: Several!

Listening in from Japan
I’m usually a reader, make sure to stop by daily, boredom and the big news have led me to listen to the podcast this time around. Great stuff!
As far as roster questions: Is it possible Inge gets a shot at 2B? Plan is a platoon anyway, if he really can put it together, seems like it could be a fit. Raburn could move back to LF, which seems to be a better fit over 2B. I like Delmon in the DH spot at this point, if that’s the scenario.
Really, I’d like whoever is hitting is well enough to play 2B and LF, whether it be Dirks, Kelly, Inge or Raburn, but going into spring training you have to like that the bottom of the order has some competition.

Anyone have an idea of when
the press conference is?
by BeardedPlayoffJesus19 on Jan 25, 2012 8:38 AM EST via mobile reply actions
I'm guessing probably not until he passes a physical and it's made official.
by ivantopumpyouup on Jan 25, 2012 8:53 AM EST up reply actions
I figured that.
I guess this is just me being inpatient and wanting more Fielder news.

I would assume they could announce it this afternoon
but maybe tomorrow. Like was said in the comment above me, after the physical

Thanks Guys.
I really appreciate the work that you guys do.
BigAl, Kurt I enjoy listening to your thoughts each Podcast.
That being said, there was a large amount of “I don’t know” and rhetorical answers from a member of the Podcast. I actually kind of missed Tokarz this time…
Overall, really liked it and look forward to spending too much time on this site while I am supposed to be working. :)

I have no reason to believe that Fielder can't hit 30 homers and 90+ RBI's 9 years from now
The best comparison to Prince is probably Jim Thome, who still hasn’t completely deteriorated as a hitter, and he’ll be 41 this season. Prince is a great a power hitter, with great patience, and hits for good average just like Thome has.
Prince Fielder career at 27 years old : .282 AVG., .390 OBP, and .929 OPS
Jim Thome’s career at 27 years old : .289 AVG., ..409 OBP, and .958 OPS.
Jim Thome’s career from 28 to 36 : .277 AVG., .409 OBP, and .983 OPS.
Thome didn’t decline at all. He actually got better.
Thome had his best years between the ages of 30 and 32 years old, where he averaged 49 Homers, .286 AVG, .414 OBP, and 1.036 OPS. So the best of Fielder may be yet to come.
Prince's last 3 years
Prince from age 25 to 27: .287 AVG, .409 OBP, .956 OPS.
That’s right in line with Thome.
But
Thome didn’t have that body type. It’ll be tough to tell.

I tweet about stuff sometimes @jackhitts.
Fielder has been one of the most durable players in the game.
Dude is built like a tank and he’s a vegan. Nothing beats a healthy life style.
Word
I agree. I just meant I didn’t think Thome was necessarily a good comp to Prince. No one is really a great comp, IMHO.

Prince vs Thome
Look at the stats from Cecil would be a good gage add maybe 2 years on his better eating habits and modern training he will start declining at age 36 when the contract expires

re: Negativity
A tiny, even microscopic point, but the phrase from Spiro Agnew is “nattering nabobs of negativism.” The phrase was coined by a young White House speech writer named Bill Safire, who went on to have a long career as a conservative columnist for the NY Times, as well as a tv news show pundit. As for the Prince signing, I’m excited! Aside from his big bat, there’s lots of soap opera potential now that he’s signed with the same team that his estranged father used to hit for.
You know, you're right about the Agnew reference!
Re-listening, I caught a few mistakes here and there in the podcast. In our defense, we were all a little gobsmacked when we recorded last night. Still gobsmacked, actually.
I'm owner/editor of The Wayne Fontes Experience a deputy editor at Bless You Boys, host the Bless You Boys Podcast and co-host The Knee Jerks podcast.
And the thing about the original "nattering nabobs of negativism" . . .
. . . is that they were right about Nixon and Agnew.
Unlike those going on about our new slugger.
This is really nice work, guys
I’m a Brewers fan, so I’ve never really ventured in here before, but from what I’ve seen the last couple days, you guys run a pretty good shop. I may adopt the Tigers as my AL team. Prince was my favorite Brewer since Yount and he will quickly become a fan favorite.
Regarding your question about who bats 4th: I mentioned it in the other thread, but it warrants mentioning here as well. In 2010, Ken Macha (and I believe Ned Yost tried it in 2008 as well) switched Braun and Fielder so Braun could bat 4th and use his speed to steal more bases without risking an out in front of Prince. Prince was very vocal that he didn’t like the move (and Braun’s numbers slipped) so he requested that he bat 4th. I think if he has his way he’ll be the cleanup hitter and Cabrera’s numbers may jump (if that’s possible),
"Well they can't test for LSD, so I started frying on weekends"
I'd rather Cabrera bat third too.
So that would work for me.
by Kurt Mensching on Jan 25, 2012 9:52 AM EST up reply actions
It makes sense because . . .
. . . Cabrera tends to hit for more average, while Fielder might have just a hair more power . . .
48 more runs
is what my simulation showed the Tigers gaining with the addition of Prince Fielder. I haven’t quite nailed down the defensive liability part of moving Cabrera to 3B for X number of games if that indeed is the case, but I think since you all are subject matters on the gloves of Inge and Cabrera you can probably come up with a range on that. My sim said 8 more runs would be given up but error bar is pretty large.

he is rockin so many different teams right there
Did we really just sign Prince Fielder? Holllllllllly sh*t.
Excellent list of topics/ questions, as usual. Even a little rosterbating!
My thoughts:
Prince Fielder? For real?Yeah, that was my reaction too. I was at work, got a text and thought for sure the guy read the rumor incorrectly. Then when I realized it was real, my fingers actually went speechless for a while. (Bet you guys have never seen Tigerdog go speechless before) Stunned!
Was Tigers owner Mike Ilitch the driving force behind this signing?Looks that way. I believe that Boras went over DD’s head with a few of these deals, including Magglio. Looks like Ilitch, and not DD, was the driving force here.
Is this contract all due to Victor Martinez tearing his ACL?Appears Victor’s injury was the trigger. If not for that, this deal probably doesn’t happen.
Have the Tigers become prohibitive favorites in the AL Central?Yes, but there’s no such thing as a lock. Remember 2008.
It’s World Series or bust for Ilitch.Yup. Dude is 82 yrs old. Ya can’t take it with you!
Jim Leyland has to bat Miguel Cabrera 3rd and Fielder 4th, right?I would hope so, and expect that to be the case. Probably a power bat in the 2 slot as well, like Boesch.
Where does Cabrera best fit in the field, if at all?Honestly, first base with Fielder as DH. Appears that Fielder was given the 1B job as part of the deal. I’d put Cabrera at 3B, move Delmon to DH, and Raburn to LF, and I think they’ll give Miggy every shot at 3B, and he’ll be better than Betemit.
If Cabrera moves to 3rd base, what happens to Brandon Inge and Don Kelly?
Who cares?
Fielder 1B because they promised him. Cabrera 3B. Victor DH, and ideally backup catcher. Getting the surgery and rehab that he needs might make him healthier than he was going into the season before he got hurt.
Of course we could see a trade.
Delmon should be the DH.
You may want to ignore them, but there are some parallels to 2008.I think the lessons of 2008 were learned the hard way, and won’t be repeated.
The Cecil Fielder factor. The biggest factor here is that Cecil’s kid (I promise not to call Prince that regularly) grew up in Detroit, so there is a home town factor. It will play well with the African American community in Detroit, which is a good thing.
Can the Tigers afford 3 players making $20 million plus a season?Forbes has Ilitch’s worth at $ 1.6 Billion, with a B. You do the math.
Is it too early to worry about future contracts and roster fallout 4-5 years down the line? Not too early, but I’d be looking at extending Cabrera. You can’t tell me that he doesn’t even notice that Fielder will be making more than he does. (23.5 M vs 22 M). You always look ahead and plan accordingly.
Let’s not forget the Tigers still need a starting pitcher, and possibly a DH.
The Tigers conclusively do NOT need a DH. They didn’t need a DH before this trade and they need on even less now. Starting pitcher, yes, but if Oswalt is out, we should be looking at a trade, or just go with the kids and see what becomes available.
Sure, why not? If Mr I wants to write a check. But here’s what I think was happening. The Tigers saw Miami going past the point of stupid for Cespedes and they had all their eggs in his basket. Then, Victor goes down and they were looking at a do nothing off season. That’s not sitting well with Ilitch, so he goes for the only guy left on the market that could really help, even if there are long term questions. I mean, he’d be 91 by the time this contract expires, so what does he care?
We’re already seeing a backlash. Some pundits and bloggers say the deal is too long, too expensive, Scott Boras is evil, Fielder won’t age well, the Tigers are over loaded with 1B/DH types, they should have signed a starter and a table setter, and so on. Do they have a point?Yes, they have a point about the length of the contract, but you can’t tell me that getting Marco Scutaro would have been better than Fielder! Okay, Boras is evil, but he’s OUR evil. We don’t know how Fielder will age, and we are over loaded with 1B/ DH types, but I’d rather have a .900 plus OPS guy at third base than Brandon freaking Inge! Boesch can set the table, and AJax can be traded for a lead off guy once they give up on him. Hope they don’t wait too long.

Inflation
Dollars will decline at least as fast as Prince, meaning revenue will increase, making his cost in terms of % of cash flow less.
Most arguments are really about context.

Using Pujols as a comparison
The Angels just had a new TV deal kick in where they will make $ 150 million per year instead of $ 50 million under their last deal. This will more than pay for CJ Wilson and Albert Pujols.
The Tigers are swimming in a very lucrative MLB revenue stream, but they won’t see nearly what the Angels get in local TV revenue, and that’s a huge difference. A big part of the reason that the Tigers have been losing money is that their stadium cost- part of their operating budget, has been higher, but as they pay that down, the interest goes down and it gradually declines. They also see a big boost in revenue when season ticket sales go up. That is virtually certain to happen in a big way now. Season tickets mean that games in April and Mondays in June against the Royals are sold. Walk ups are a sure thing as the season goes on and the team is doing well. Prince can “pay for himself” as long as he is helping the team to win. But as he declines, he’ll become an albatross.
"King of Minutiae"
Apparently Cespedes doesn't want to play for Miami...
the latest from Danny Knobler. Incredible. As Kurt mentioned in the podcast, Cespedes could actually be a big surplus value type of contract in a few years…so why not still go for him?
I’m not ruling the Tigers out of anything at this point. If you make the Fielder plunge, what’s another $6 mil/year for Cespedes?
haha
after everyone talked about Miami being the prohibitive favorite the entire winter!
by Kurt Mensching on Jan 25, 2012 4:28 PM EST up reply actions
I find it hard to believe
that Cespedes is making these comments without his agent knowing what he’s going to say.
In other words, he could have a strategic purpose to drive up the price in Miami.
If they’re genuine, is there a fear factor that some Cuban gangsters would come after him for defecting or something?
"King of Minutiae"
well, the fact he's making these comments
could help explain why Miami is promising to offer crazy money. Now when they don’t get him, they can at least say they tried!
by Kurt Mensching on Jan 25, 2012 7:41 PM EST up reply actions
I have a sneaky feeling
that the Tigers were putting a lot of their eggs in his basket, but the chatter from Miami left them feeling like they could be left holding the bag with nothing, and that contributed in some way to the Tigers getting Prince.
Mr Ilitch made no secret that he wanted to see a big bat at the end of last season when he did the interview with Wojo. Many of us were just waiting for that big move and had given up on the idea.
I also feel like Cespedes is going to take half a season in the minors, unless some club finds room for him in CF where his defense will justify his presence in the lineup.
"King of Minutiae"
Trade put us up to the Yanks and Rangers, now Mr.I has to do one more thing
Hire the very very best Dietitians. One for Miggy, one for Prince and one for rest of the team including their farm system.
Kurt, great job
Very impressed with your ability to not come across as a reactionary lunatic like a lot of the Tigers’ fans these days. I very much enjoyed this podcast and I hope for more of the same in the future.
Glad you liked it and we'll keep 'em coming!

Thanks Al
I didn’t mean to exclude everyone except Kurt. You all did a great job. The pic of Cabrera certainly looks like he is more of an athlete than I would have thought, so who knows…
I think there were a lot of good points made. Except with regards to Inge. This guy is NOT a starting – well, anything – in baseball and it shouldn’t worry us that he won’t be playing 3rd. He’s a bench guy and a good one at that. No one wants him and teams won’t trade anything of value for him. I liked the views of the podcast team and I wish all of the fans would have that level of rational.
