Nice interview

I somewhat tuned out the LaRussa talk in the middle, but it was nice to hear both guys praise Leyland at the end.

Interesting comments from JL on the lineup

He made another reference to having Delmon and Boesch in the corner OF positions.
Given his lineup that he laid out in the presser on Thursday, that would mean that the DH is “Dirks, Thomas, Kelly” batting in the 8th spot. The mind boggles.

Am I excited for this year?

Yes, absolutely. Next year is when the fun really starts. A Jax, Boesch, Cabrera, Fielder, V Mart, Avila, Peralta (possibly), Raburn, Santiago (?)… Wow.

by BeardedPlayoffJesus19 on Jan 27, 2012 6:07 PM EST via mobile reply actions

That is a trick queetion.

I appreciate what Inge did for the Tigers in the past. As for Delmon, he played lights out in the ALDS last year and without him we don’t win that series. I pray he DHs this year and plays well. That said, I do not want to see them back after this year and I would even trade Inge for anything so we didn’t have to pay his 7.5m contract.

Nice to dream but...

The only way any team would take Inge is if we ate most of the salary. No GM is stupid enough to pay all that at this point.

by Sutelc on Jan 28, 2012 9:18 AM EST up reply actions

Thats what I was hoping for.

Like an over paid fifth starter or even a 2nd baseman. I always wondered if Inge would play 2nd as well. Would sure up our defense some what. Inge @ second, Raburn in LF and Delmon DH. Just a thought….

Jurrjens is an overpaid 5th Starter

Heard an interesting mutual salary dump scenario…

Young and Inge (plus $8M) / prospect
for
Jurrjens and Prado

ATL gets:
- Avoids Arb w/Jurrjens in 2013
- Avoids Arb w/Prado in 2013
- Saves $6M (Jurrjens+Prado=$10M + $8M – Young+Inge= $12M)
- Inge as defensive replacement for Chipper
- Chance Young produces in LF platoon
- Prospect

DET gets:
- 5th Starter
- Prado’s versatility (2B/3B/LF)
- Frees up DH for Cabrera w/o Young in LF (if necessary)

Cost to DET is $2M less than $10M offer to Oswalt for 1Yr.
May have to swap Raburn for Young – but less cash/prospect.

Interesting…$6M savings probably not enough for ATL may depend on prospect.

by Boomer Dog on Jan 29, 2012 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

Det gets two studs

Atl gets screwed

I think they’re smarter than that.

Not about being smarter...just addressing needs

If DET were to increase the salary offset to $10M (equal to Oswalt offer) ATL would realize a 10% payroll reduction…

Braves main concerns were an OF bat (production/RBIs) and new owner’s (Liberty Media) payroll concern (reduction) given they are paying CLE $10M for D. Lowe.

However, I agree it’s more likely they try to move Jurrjens alone after spring training – particularly if someone has a starter injured.

by Boomer Dog on Jan 29, 2012 3:22 PM EST up reply actions

They don't want to reduce payroll per se

Word was that they were trying to make room to make a run at Reyes or Rollins but needed to clear some room to do it. The price for Reyes got out of control, and the market for Rollins was cool until Reyes signed.

What they asked for from KC was ridiculous in terms of prospects. They could afford to move Prado because they have Uggla at 2B, Chipper at 3B, and Prado’s bat doesn’t play as well as a corner OF. Play him in the IF at either spot, and his value shoots up.

There was also some talk of a split of opinion on Delmon within the Braves front office. They’d have put in a claim on him last year, but the Tigers stepped up and got priority on the claim, being in the same league. The Tigers would have to give ATL a couple of top prospects or Delmon and a top prospect to get Prado. If not Castellanos or Turner, I’d do it. I’m warming to Smyly as well but for an every day 2B, I’d still do it.

I'd like to reduce Young per se

DY and a prospect (except Turner/Castellanos) for Prado would be great…

- Prado’s flexibility at 2B/3B/LF
- Allow Cabrera to DH more often…reduce risk of injury at 3B
- Allow Raburn to play/platoon in LF or DH – Not 2B
- Reduce reliance on Santiago – not convinced everyday player

More addition by subtraction of Young

Why would Atlanta want to downgrade with their bargaining chips when they get only salary relief?

They want usable players for weaker positions through their strengths. Always think of things from the other side when thinking of a trade.

Young & Kelly for Prado...Proposed by Brave's Wire Writer

Detroit Tigers: Martin Prado for Delmon Young and Don Kelly

http://network.yardbarker.com/mlb/article_external/3_trades_braves_should_consider_trade_3/9581750

From Brave’s Wire writer Jim Pratt:

Young could provide what the Braves need in in left field (bat) and Kelly could replace Prado’s glove.

Maybe salary relief / prospects are what what the team needs to sign / re-sign / re-place players…

Here is my dilemma

My favorite baseball team is the Detroit Tigers.
My favorite type of baseball is great defense.
I see lots of ups and downs in my baseball viewing this season.

Here is my dilemma

My favorite baseball team is the Detroit Tigers.
My favorite type of baseball is Detroit Tigers baseball.
I will still attempt to watch all 162 games this season.

Will MLB at bat for my phone be less choppy for when I’m watching during class?

An economic thought

There has been much hand wringing in the media about the cost of Prince’s contract in later years. Reports I read show that the salary per year quickly gets to $24M and stays there in contrast to Puhols’s contract which grows each year. Note that in 9 yrs $24M will be the equivalent of $18.3 M in 2012 dollars. Certainly can buy a lot of hamburgers for that, but the constant salary works in the tigers favor economically.

by MR_AZ on Jan 29, 2012 3:34 PM EST reply actions

If I'm Mr Ilitch at age 82

a nine year contract wouldn’t bug me.
Ya can’t take it with you.
Just hope that either Prince is still productive nine more years, or the Ilitch kids have the same desire to win as their dad had.

Another 3B thought

I can’t see Cabrera spending most games at 3B this year when he and Fielder can rotate between 1B and DH at least until VMart comes back (if he does in 2012) and Inge and Kelly provide much better defense at 3B. It makes sense for Cabrera to have more experience at 3B so he is prepared for VMart’s return, for games in NL parks, and for hopefully the WS.

However something will likely have to give, perhaps in 2 yrs as the logjam could get more tight. VMart is signed through 2014 (4 yr deal signed in 2011) and that also may be the ETA of a certain 3B Nick Castalanos. Maybe he moves to LF. Having Cabrera at 3B might slow the progress of Castalanos up the minor league ranks (this would be a good thing if it allowed him to progress based on his development not based on a need at the ML level). Potentially a much better problem to be trying to fix than how to find offense from amongst Streiby, Clete, Kelly, Iorg, et al.
