Oswalt signs with Cardinals
I don't think anybody really expected that he'd end up in Detroit after the report from last week, but it's evidently a done deal that he's going to St. Louis.

There's more to the story concerning the Tigers
Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that Oswalt turned down a one-year, $10MM offer from the Tigers, and that being close to his Mississippi home is a major factor in his decision.
Though Oswalt’s agent Bob Garber denied it, one other person familiar with the Tigers’ discussions with regarding said Oswalt declined to accept Detroit’s offer of about $10-million after it met Garber’s asking price. That person said Garber requested $10 million, but after Tigers owner Mike Ilitch signed off on the $10 million, Garber later informed Detroit that Oswalt was not prepared to take the offer. Garber denied by text that he had asked for $10 million, saying, "I never gave the Tigers a number.’’
And even more
From MLive:
“I don’t think we’ll get Roy Oswalt,” Dombrowski said Friday in a radio interview.
So he’ll be a Tiger on Monday, right?

Help me understand this
being close to his Mississippi home is a major factor in his decision
He’s not going to be driving from Mississippi to St. Louis on game days. He’s just not. And he’s not going to be traveling to Mississippi for 4 days between starts either. And he’s not going to be pulling Roger Clemens and staying in Mississippi while the team goes on road trips.
So someone help me understand how St. Louis makes more sense for him because he’s from Mississippi.

Perhaps, his wife and kids will visit him often
St Louis is just a 7 hour drive away from his Mississippi home.
Arlington is an 8 hour drive.
Anything more than an 8 hour drive gets pretty grueling.
Can’t blame his wife for not wanting to fly either. Flying stinks when your alone with 3 young kids. She’d have to drive to airport, leave the car in a parking garage, wait in long lines at the airport, check in everyone’s bags, go through security, wait more, then fly to destination, then wait for bags, then rent a car, then go back to airport for bags that you lost. All that while keeping track of all the kids. A few days later return the rental car and go through the whole mess again. It’s not a one person job.
If I’m his wife, I’d rather load up the SUV with the kids in the morning, give them their movies and juice boxes, then be in St. Louis or Arlington in 8 hours. Nice and easy.
Still not a done deal yet
But they’re close.

St Louis GM denied any deal in works with Oswalt on Sat
But we’ve seen that before…
The club wouldn't announce anything official until a weekday anyway
So that’s not surprising.

Yeah, but this was a flat denial by Mozeliak
and he says they’re not close to a deal yet, either
It’s believed that Roy would like to pitch for the Cards or Rangers, though

Just because Mozeliak denied it doesn't mean he's telling the truth

True. It's not like the guy is Dave Dombrowski!
One thing about DD is that when he tells you something, it’s generally accurate. At least until Boras goes over his head to the owner.

I'm not quite sure I understand Oswalt's reasoning
Why would he turn down more money? It’s not like he’d be going to play for the Royals. He would be getting a better deal and play for a WS contender. If he goes to the Rangers I can understand that, but I don’t see the Cards duplicating their success this season. Still, more money is more money. Maybe it’s because he knows our infield isn’t going to prop up his pitching numbers well this season, and I know he is trying to prove himself worthy of a large contract after 2012, so stats matter.
According to Baseball Reference, Oswalt has made $91,950,000 in his career
So money likely isn’t an issue when you are on track to make a $100M+ in your career. He can afford to pick a team in more comfortable surroundings closer to home.
I'm owner/editor of The Wayne Fontes Experience a deputy editor at Bless You Boys, host the Bless You Boys Podcast and co-host The Knee Jerks podcast.
He is also reportedly interested in getting one last big payday after 2012
Going to the Cards puts him into position to dominate a division that no longer contains Prince Fielder on a pitching staff that isn’t exactly loaded with front-line stars, depending on the health of Carpenter and Wainwright.

Offer him $ 8,150,000 and make it an even $ 100 million!
BTW- the Cards are denying that they’ve signed Oswalt, and the Rangers haven’t even made an offer yet.
The Tigers reportedly offered him $ 10 million and he turned them down. Bass turd!

Lincecum
has made more than Oswalt pre-free agency. Crazy.
Most arguments are really about context.
