Tigers sign Aussie Pitcher
In a move down under the radar, the Tigers have signed Australian pitcher Warwick Saupold to a minor league contract. According to the release "Saupold has been the ABL's best and most consistent hurler all season, leading the league in innings pitched (70.0) and posting a record-setting 1.41 ERA. He struck out 53 and allowed just 43 hits and two home runs, while issuing 22 walks to make him a favourite for the Pitcher of the Year award." Details of the Tigers connections in Australia are in the linked article.

Interesting news
he sure has quite the name.. Warwick Saupold.. he sounds like a European novelist
Chicks dig me, because I rarely wear underwear and when I do it's usually something unusual
Can't be worse than Brad Thomas
Okay, he probably can be.

Interesting sign
How come we haven’t heard any news about this when he supposedly signed on the 25th?

I wasn't specifically talking about this site
I’m just talking about all Tiger news in general, not even mlbtr.com which updates minor league signings for every team.

I got it from a Tiger fan working on a rig off the coast of New Zealand or something
I haven’t seen a mention in any mainstream or even secondary Tiger media outlets
If you cut and paste that link, it’s an interesting story about the Tigers’ connections in the Aussie league. Brendan Wise was on his team, and Thomas and Oxley had time with the Tigers.
"King of Minutiae"
His numbers are nice...
What’s his scouting report?
Also, I was going to fanpost this news but there was a bit of commotion about this “Prince Fielder” guy signing with Detroit that distracted me.

Brad Thomas's numbers were nice too
I’m wondering if he gets an invite to spring training with the big boys.

You know
I cricket, the ball hits the ground first before the batter swings. Only Vlad can play the cross-over effectively. There’s nothing to see here.

Good stats this year in the ABL
Held opponents to a .173 average, with a 0.93 WHIP.
I was poking around the ABL’s website, and came across what could be the best baseball name I’ve seen in a while: Boss Moanaroa. (My guess is that he’s of Maori background.)
Did you notice the Canadian spelling?
He’s a favourite for pitcher of the year.

I did.
Seriously, the US is all alone in the English-speaking world with the dropping of the u’s. We’re not the freaks here. It’s you!

Easy now.
The US might have the biggest number of English as a first langauge speakers in the world, but there’s many times that who have it as a second language, and most of ’em use (mostly-) British spellings.
I’ll keep my colour and neighbour and favourite and defence, thanks. :)

Our English makes sense and drops extraneous u's.
And was modified to get that whole being part of an empire feeling out. Those poor souls stuck with the inferior “Queen’s” English are brainwashed and subject to the boot heel of the royals.
If you love freedom you use US English!
Our (shared) English makes very little sense
As Bill Bryson’s several excellent books on the history of English (on both sides of the pond) points out, we spell things like they were pronounced 400 years ago: “knee” was indeed pronounced “kuh-nee”. Heck, most of our words don’t match up very well, either with their constituent letters or with each other (plough, cough, though and through come to mind).
Besides, I like the u’s in there. They remind me that a good chunk of our lexicon came from French (cf. couleur, honeur) — and them’s the folks what done given you your fancy-pants Statue o’ Liberty. Most of the rest came from Latin and Norse, which is why we have so many darn words for the same thing (e.g. royal, regal, kingly).
I don’t feel like I’m under any sort of boot heel — Liz seems pretty nice, so I don’t mind having her on all our coins. The monarchy doesn’t really hold any power in governments in the Commonwealth, other than largely ceremonial rubber-stamp duties (the King-Byng Affair being a notable exception; it’s less tawdry than you might think).
Seriously though, if you like this sort of thing — and it’s pretty clear that I do — you really oughtta check out Bryson’s The Mother Tongue: English and How it Got That Way, available at fine bookstores everywhere, and probably in your neighbourhood.

That title offends me!
How it Got that Way instead of how it became that way? What is this world coming to when titles are allowed to be awful!
Spent four days in Ontario
Weak dollar here or strong dollar there? Everything is expensive. And your sales tax is a total bitch. Is income tax lower?
The other sports are just sports. Baseball is a love. ~Bryant Gumbel, 1981
Asked a lot of questions there, pal.
Re: our respective dollars
Canada’s economy didn’t tank quite as hard as the US or Europe (we didn’t let the foxes guard the henhouse, bankwise, for the last two decades), so relative to the US we’ve been doing okay. Typically, if C$1.00 = US$0.80, we’re doing well; for the past few years we’ve been within a few cents of par, sometimes over. Sure helps with spring-training junkets.
Re: things are expensive
Part of that is because a lot of our stuff is imported from the US, so it’s gonna cost a touch more. Having done a lot of shopping in the US, I don’t think there’s too much that’s completely out of whack.
Re: sales taxes
In Ontario it’s 13%; essentially, 5 goes to the federal government and 8 goes to the province. This place costs money to run, but I think we do alright.
Re: income tax
Going by last year’s tax guide, and let’s say you have a taxable income of $60k… I did the math in a quick-and-dirty kind of way, and things do vary a bit from province to province:
- provincial tax = $3968.80 (6.6%), plus $600 for the Ontario Health Premium
- federal tax = $10332.60 (17.2%)
…but at least that gives you some ballpark kind of idea where we are.

So wait...
Canadian’s have money? I thought you guys just swapped pelts and gunpowder for freshly caught fish at the trading post.

The important thing is
How much was the posting fee? And can we still afford Cespedes?
by manic in Detroit on Jan 29, 2012 8:29 PM EST reply actions 1 recs
this is a minor league deal
So I’m guessing it’s going to cost them next to nothing in baseball terms. Posting fees only exist as an agreement between the MLB and the Japanese league
by Kurt Mensching on Jan 29, 2012 10:29 PM EST up reply actions
The history of the posting fee is interesting.
I’d like to see the NPB player’s union finally break posting, though.
Posting fees are a restraint on free trade
much like the Japanese tariff on beef.
However something should be done to control Dominican and other Latin child labor signings to avoid more Fausto Carmonas.

Aw Jeez...
So now when a child comes up missing at Comerica, there will be a mixture of “Prince Fielder ate it” and “Maybe the dingo ate your baby jokes.”
Super.
I'm so ahead of my time, my parents haven't met yet
When do children come up missing at the CoPa?
