Sign Fielder and move Cabrera to Third
There. I've said it. Take your shots folks... I know Cabrera wasn't highly thought of as a third baseman a couple of years ago, and we might find that he's still a defensive liability there, but consider the offensive upgrade! Having two major hitters like that, along with Martinez, Avila, and the rest of the crowd would be interesting to say the least.
So... what's the downside other than money and a decrease in defense at third?

well that sounds perfectly logical.

I tried this in OOTP 12 and it didn't upgrade the offense that much!
I have a grand idea: let's win a game.

might as well trade Boesch, DY, and Wilk
for Matt Kemp while we’re at it

Let's start a comprehensive list. Here's my contrbution:
- Money isn’t just a downside, it’s a cliff face. Signing Fielder means about 55-60% of the total payroll is taken up by 12% of the 25-man roster, which will tie DD’s hands for at least the next 3 years or so. He already needs to find money to cover raises and extensions for current roster players, and he needs to have some freedom to pursue free agents beyond this offseason.
- It’s hard to imagine negotiating anything close to a sane contract after the Pujols signing earlier.
- Besides being a defensive disaster at third, it’s also a downgrade at first. Although this particular problem may not be an issue beyond the next year or so, because
- Fielder might have to become a full-time DH by then, which leaves Victor Martinez without a lineup spot.
Here's our salary commitment for 2012 and on
Per Cot’s Contracts:

Note that payroll for 2012 is already at $88.9 million, and that figure doesn’t include what we’ll pay for Porcello, Scherzer, Coke, Kelly, and Young. Come 2013, we’ll also have to start paying fair wages to AJax, Avila, Boesch, and Fister. Which of these do you want to cut to pay Fielder?
actually that's Tigerdog's piece
but it is at BYB. So I’ll give a +3/4

Is this rhetorical?
So… what’s the downside other than money and a decrease in defense at third?
Aren’t those two HUGE issues reason enough to not do it?

Ya got to admit it is fun to see what posts the off-season brings.
It is posts like this that helped me choose my user name!

I hope all is well with you and yours and my favorite German Shepard, Donner.
Last time I check it is only 4,571,113 seconds or 76,318 minutes until the Tigers play Florida Southern College in Lakeland.
I can not wait until pitchers and catchers report, because that is even closer!

I always wondered
If the people coming over from MLive realize that it is an insult when we say things like that…
they have to have some level of intelligence to find BYB
so I like to think of them as the top 1% ;)

do they coming in here thinking they are “representin the MLiiiive” crowd and are all proud of their l33t trade proposal prowess?

Having both
in the same infield for a whole season could tilt the Earth off of it’s axis. Weather patterns would change and by December 2012….Yeah…bad idea.
We're all goners anyhow, right?

In other words
It was serious, but due to the fall out from the rest of the community you are going to play it off as a joke….got it.
You got it :)
I’m not as deeply analytic as many of you all are here. I just saw a way to greatly increase our offense (basically replacing the third base platoon’s collective bats with Fielder’s) and taking, what I figured would have been a minimal hit in defense by moving Cabrera back to third. He I has improved a lot in the infield, but that could be due to the lesser demands at first versus third, I realize.
I am a bit surprised by the venom, but that’s ok. :)
As far as the money goes, yes, the cost would be very high… but I don’t mind, since it’s not my money. ;)
To all that read and responded… sorry if I offended you!

Please don't take us too seriously.
Think of it more as gentle ribbing. To explain the MLive stuff: occasionally someone new comes around who we characterize as an “MLive commenter,” named after another website that offers a free-for-all dumping ground for Tigers discussion. Here, an “MLive commenter” is characterized by the following tendencies:
- Aggressively advancing naive recommendations or points of view that seem taken primarily from video game experience
- Posting in a sneering, arrogant tone
- Putting little/no effort toward spelling, punctuation and grammar, showing a lack of consideration for fellow readers
That clearly doesn’t describe you, but we’re cranky and tired of roster speculation while waiting for something (anything) to happen, or else we probably wouldn’t be so chippy. Hope you keep coming around – we’re usually a pretty friendly bunch.
No Worries

You definitely called it. Dang. Well done.
It sort of reminds me of that high school kid who makes the full court shot at the end of the game to win it… and winds up on Sportscenter. But then ends up a garbageman after HS because he wasn’t any good at basketball.
This is insane.
