I woke up this morning and felt nearly compelled to sketch out our 25-man roster headed into the playoffs. I thought I would have a few more tough decisions than I did, but here's what I think.
I've went with Leyalnd's standard ratio of 13:12 for positional players vs. pitchers. This is certainly up for debate; you don't always need those 12 pitchers in the post-season with a four-man rotation, but I don't see any positional players that would have enough utility over my current 13 to warrant a 14:11 mix.
Positional Players (13)Avila & Laird
Fielder, Infante, Cabrera, Peralta, Santiago
Berry, Jackson, Dirks, Young, Boesch, Garcia
Snubs & Notes:
Kelly is out and so is Worth. I don't think either player offers enough to the team to warrant a spot. You can argue that Kelly might contribute more than Boesch or Garcia, but I don't see a situation where Kelly is a better bet than Garcia or Boesch's "power" LH batt off the bench. Garcia offers better defense, speed, and more upside with the bat. And with Berry and Dirks starting most game vs. RHP, I don't see Kelly's LH bat being a plus.
Pitchers (12):
Verlander, Fister, Scherzer, Sanchez
Smyly, Porcello, Coke, Alburquerque, Villarreal, Dotel, Benoit, Valverde
Snubs & Notes:
Downs, Marte, and Putkonen are out. You might stretch to make a case for Downs as our second lefty, but it would almost have to be in place of Smyly, who hasn't been strong out of the bullpen in a left-handers role. However, with Scherzer's status a bit in question, I think the Tigers will certainly want both Porcello and Smyly available.
So overall, the decisions seem pretty simple to me; much more than last season. Thoughts?
