Tigers release Adam Wilk, sell his contract to the Korean Baseball League

Derick E. Hingle-US PRESSWIRE

The Tigers' minor league starting pitching depth became that much shallower this afternoon with the release of Adam Wilk.

The Detroit Tigers have announced a pair of minor league moves. Starting pitcher Adam Wilk was released and his contract sold to a team in the Korean Baseball League, while lefty reliever Matt Hoffman was officially outrighted to Triple A Toledo.

Wilk is a 25 year old left-handed starting pitcher who was an 11th round pick in the June 2009 amateur draft., having cups of coffee with Tigers the past two seasons. In three 2012 starts Wilk was 0-3 with an 8.18 ERA. He made five relief appearances with the Tigers in 2011, posting a 5.40 ERA. In four minor league seasons Wilk was 30-23 with a 2.66 ERA and 385 strikeouts in 83 starts.

Wilk was given a shot at the 5th starter job in spring training, but lost out to Drew Smyly. He would spend the majority of the 2012 season with Triple A Toledo, posting a 7-11 record in 24 starts for the Mud Hens, his 2.77 ERA fourth in the International League. Wilk was also named the Tigers minor league pitcher of the month in August.

Wilk is noted for having good command and put up solid numbers while moving up though the system.. But he was unable to replicate his minor league success in the big leagues. The Tigers have decided to cut bait on a pitcher whom they consider to have limited upside, at best.

Hoffman was designated for assignment on Dec. 10th. After passing through waivers, the 24 year old left-handed reliever was assigned to Triple A Toledo. Hoffman was drafted by the Tigers in 2007 and has spent the past two seasons with the Mud Hens. He appeared in 43 games in 2012, posting a 1-2 record and 3.69 ERA in 46 1/3 innings.
