BYB writing opportunity available!
Bumped. Get your submissions in by tonight if you're interested! --Kurt
Links posts are valuable. They're also kind of time consuming to do right. I used to do them a few times a week but more and more time that I could spend doing a better job in other areas of the blog was being taken up. So I just kind of stopped doing links posts altogether. Fortunately we've got some people doing FanShots on a regular basis sharing links. I'd really love to see that expanded into full posts again: I just don't want to do them myself!
If you're the kind of person who likes to read a bunch of stories and share with others, and who can commit to doing a few a week, we'd really like to have you as a front-page author. It is volunteer work, but at least you're going to have access to more eyeballs than you would at almost any other location, Tigers-wise. And those eyeballs range from fans to national media to front office and players. It's a good way to make a name for yourself and hopefully open up some doors down the road. It's a cool gig.
If you're interested, I'd like you to send a sample post to BYBTigers@gmail.com. What I'm looking for is 2-fold: A writer who fits into the tone of posts we already do here while maintaining an individual voice, and 2) Someone who finds links off the beaten path. Anyone can round up what the Freep, News, MLB.com and MLive are doing. I'd like to find someone who travels different paths who can bring what they find interesting back to the rest of us.
Serious inquiries only, please. If this can't be done right and on a predictable schedule, it's better not to do it at all.
If you have any questions, fire them at me in this post or to the e-mail address above.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of the Bless You Boys writing staff.

What a scam
Just say no to working for free. Sites like this exist and are profitable because they drive the competition out of business by using free labor. Should be ashamed.
If you want someone to work for you, pay them. This whole idea of “getting your name out there” is the same line they all use, and it’s garbage.
Hmm
Don’t like the principles behind the site then don’t visit it, I am sure there are plenty of other sites that don’t have volunteer writers that you can enjoy.
My kingdom for a edit button sometimes...
I am sure all the non-paid interns at the major media outlets wonder where you get the idea that “sites like this” are the only ones using free labor.
I really dont think BYB is a profit machine
The reason this community works is because of the content. You can get content one of two ways. One, you could pay top dollar for it. Two, you could staff it with writers you genuinely love the Tigers and everything about the organization. Personally I love sites like this built from fans and not egotistical sports writers that think so highly of themselves while talking down to the rest of us “normals”.
The job doesnt pay enough for you? Find something else to do with your time.
Yeah
If you want to support writers, you can visit ESPN and pay 30 bucks for access.

it'd be a scam if we told someone they'd be paid and then didn't pay them.
kind of unfair of you to comment on this without actually knowing how SBN and BYB work in that realm. “we” don’t pay anybody, if money’s involved, it isn’t ours.
also, if it’s garbage, feel free to frequent another blog whose “work” philosophy you support.

people also don't get paid for their comments
but they seem happy share hundreds or thousands of them.
I’d love to have a big budget here and shower money on all sorts of people. Realistically, it’s just not going to happen. Realistically, most people who start and run their own blog don’t see a dime for their work and end up writing for a couple of dozen people.
For folks who feel the itch to share their opinions when it comes to baseball and the Tigers and have a lot of other people see them, you’re not going to top BYB. That’s all we can realistically offer.

Really?
Because writing for a site with this kind of traffic is a hell of a resume line.

FYI: Most bloggers who do make money (and it's not many) earn slave wages
That includes myself and the time I spend writing/updating my own site, TWFE. And I know for a fact the same goes for Kurt here at BYB.
I write online and produce podcasts because it’s fun and I have something to say, not because I want to get paid.
I started, like most other bloggers, just for the enjoyment of it. If a little cash, exposure, and other opportunities come along, great. But I just consider it nothing more than found money…usually enough to buy good beer.

I sold my first piece of writing 21 years ago
And I made a living as a reporter for many years. I still put out probably 2-3,000 words a week for my current job. I like getting paid to write things and I’ve managed to make a career out of it. I support paying other people who do creative work, whether writers or otherwise.
That being said, I’ve been happy to contribute articles to BYB for free and if I had anything near the time it’d take to do these posts, I’d love to take it on. All Kurt’s doing is giving somebody a platform for blogging that they might otherwise do elsewhere.
"Virtually all tactical ploys—the sacrifice bunt, the stolen base, the hit-and-run—operate on average to reduce run scoring." -- Eric Walker
we can further note
that the getting your foot in thing really does pay off. When I was awarded with the editor position for the MSP Tigers Annual — an opportunity this site helped me get — the first people I asked on board were the ones associated with BYB. They were all paid at pretty good rates for their stories, and the Tigers Annual was easily found on store shelves statewide and surprisingly found on quite a few magazine racks nationwide, too.

Which reminds me...
will there be another Tigers Annual this year? Or is it really a Tigers Biennial?

unfortunately
maple street press tried to expand too fast, found not every team’s annual sold as well, and went bankrupt.
Hopefully we’ll find something next year. Might self publish but didn’t have enough lead time to do that up to standards this spring.

I know a number of bloggers . . .
. . . who started as a hobby and ended up making money at it—guys like Matt Yglesias, Ezra Klein, Kevin Drum and Duncan Black.
Of course, that was back in the pioneer days . . .

As David said...
writing for this place looks good on a resume. If I had the time to do this I’d offer myself in a heart beat. Unfortunately I could only ever be an occasional contributor, so Fanposts help fill my need to write when I have the time.
Seriously.
If I wasn’t already loaded down with as much stuff as I do in my down time I’d actually help out beyond being the secret police.
…crap, I’ve said too much.

What the hell?
It isn’t work. It’s a hobby.
This is a website of FANS. This is where we gather to trade ideas, follow the team we love, and banter with other intelligent folks. Writing here, whether as a comment or a longer piece, is what we’re doing for love of the game. Oh yeah — just went Full Costner.
Anyway, treating this as a job is like treating your tumblr account as a job. I might post stuff all day. It might be interesting. It might stimulate conversation…but it sure as hell isn’t my JOB.
Occupy BYB!

Kurt is the 1%!
That is, part of the 1% of awesome baseball bloggers.
Seriously, I love this site and I don’t know what I’d do without it as far as Tigers news/interaction goes.

Does the job come with a press pass
so that I can go into the Tigers locker room during spring training? If so I am all in!
since a few people have asked, here are what links post typically look like
http://www.blessyouboys.com/section/morning-lede
Here’s a different version, by friend of mine and former BYB editor Ian Casselberry:
http://www.mlive.com/tigers/index.ssf/2012/01/detroit_tigers_links_how_do_yo.html
What I am looking for in asking for a sample is to see how you personally see yourself using the space.
Question
I am interested in this. Do all links have to be Tiger-related? I’ve seen some sites that do this daily and include links to their own team as well as general baseball-related links.
I’m just curious because I read a lot (a LOT) of baseball-related material that isn’t just Tigers-related. Could be interesting.

no
could be interesting MLB stories, stories that impact AL rivals, whatever. as long as it’s something your average BYB might like to know about
by Kurt Mensching on Feb 1, 2012 8:01 PM EST up reply actions
man, that sounds like an awesome opportunity
Kurt… exactly how predictable of a schedule are you looking for? Every day? A few times a week?
I might send a sample your way if I think I’d have the time to contribute properly.
Did we really just sign Prince Fielder? Holllllllllly sh*t.
One question
Does this require finding a myriad of different stories and providing links, or can it also mean writing one story, and providing links to the data you found?

this is the story format I'm looking to fill

Basically finding interesting stories from around the web and sharing them with a sentence (or a few sentences) with readers.

I was intrigued for a moment
But that was before I realized that probably 80% of the off-site Tigers content I read comes from BYB link posts in the first place.
Thanks for the opportunity
Unfortunately, I work Monday-Friday as a small town reporter— couple that with a 2 year old child, and college classes on the weekend, and I am booked as is. I thought I’d have time to guest-write articles for Yahoo! for pay on weekends, but I haven’t even had time for that…
I do look forward to spending too much of my free time on this site though.

SWTOR for me
I’m addicted to Force-choking annoying people.

Is it bad that when I read "Force-choking"
I had visions of Todd Jones?

is there a NON "force choking"?

The other guys in the Editorial Dept. with me rave about Skyrim, but I’m playing more DC Universe and Killzone 3 right now.
