What Are Your Favorite Things About Being a Tigers Fan?
As I already mentioned in today's link dump, BYB grandfather Ian Casselberry wrote a post at Big League Stew about the best things about being a Tigers fan. While I doubt that anyone here would argue with the 10 things on his list, there are countless other reasons of why people love this team so much.
One glaring omission that many have already pointed out is Ernie Harwell. Even the majority of younger members here have fond memories of listening to Mr. Harwell at some point. If anything, he's above this list, a timeless individual that will never be forgotten among the Tiger faithful.
Another that I would add is James Earl Van Horn, better known as "Eat 'em Up Tigers Guy." I make sure to walk by Mr. Van Horn before every Tigers game I attend, if only to fist bump his giant hand holding the cup of change that provides the musical accompaniment to his gravely chant.
Before I take any other ideas, I turn it over to you. What are your favorite things about being a Tigers fan?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of the Bless You Boys writing staff.

Walking into the old Tiger Stadium
1st thing I hear is an old squeaky southern voice yelling “Programs”. Then I notice the smell of hot dogs. As I walk up through the dark tunnel towards the field I see the greenest most beautiful grass that I’ve ever seen before. That’s how I was baptized by the Detroit Tigers.
Currently my favorite thing
Bless You Boys. This place is the best.

Family
I’ve never lived in Michigan. My parents both lived in suburbs of Detroit in their childhoods. Being the youngest of 7, I had probably the least connection to the city. But as for the teams of Detroit, I was always plugged in throughout my growing up. Cheering for the Tigers and the others was a way to stay connected to my brothers and father and grandparents.
The Olde English D,
the timeless home whites that haven’t changed in 80 years, the history of hall of famers and All Stars and Championships. And right now, we have an owner, a GM and a manager who do things the right way. The Tigers have great fans. Its not hard to see why players want to play for Detroit.
Tiger fans are also loyal to there players
You don’t see many Tiger players getting booed like in other cities
Watching my wife become a baseball fan
Before we met my wife had never watched baseball (she is from Indonesia). When we first started dating and for the first seven years of our marriage she still couldn’t get into the game watching it on TV overseas. Now that we have moved back to the states and have actually gone to a few games she gets more and more into the games and is starting to yell at the TV almost as much as I do on the occasions that the Tigers are on down here.
Last year during the playoffs was the best. She would tell her friends that she couldn’t go out because the Tigers were on and she would schedule our evenings around Tiger games.
A couple of weeks ago she told me that we need to make sure that we buy tickets for every Sat or Sunday spring training game at Lakeland and that for Valentines day she wants a Jersey, she still hasn’t told me who’s she wants yet though it is between Fielder and Cabrera.
How do I love "D"? Let me count the ways
(Appropriate for Valentines Day)
1) Walking in to Comerica and feeling like I’m home
2) Cheering for a team that acts like one. If we’ve had any prima donnas, they’re long gone and the object of scorn
3) An owner and organization that treats its fans with respect. Thanks for taking care of those fountains when the Big 3 couldn’t, Mr. I!
4) Ernie. Always Ernie. “For lo the winter is past….”
5) Taking the Carhart jacket off the big tiger
6) Memories of Tiger stadium — never saw anything so green in my life.
7) 1968
8) The Bird. That was the summer after my sister-in-law died suddenly at the age of 29. Watching his antics that year brought me, my brother and their then 6 year old daughter closer and helped ease some pain. (Although her favorite player was "Rusty Stub ")
9) Fans that know baseball, appreciate the history and never give up.
10) We’re not Cleveland!

Yup. Rec'd.
My sentiments, exactly, and maybe a few more.
Tiger fans are the best baseball fans in the world. Very knowledgeable and passionate about the game.
I wrote this piece a few years ago about what the Tigers mean to me, and published it in a fan post on BYB.

Tiger fans . . .
. . . so much nicer than the fans of the Sox (either), the Yanks, the Angels, the Phillies, etc.
Trivial, but...
I’ve always thought we have hands down the best name of any team in MLB. A Tiger is totally bad ass. What have other teams got? Birds. Items of clothing. Racially insensitive cartoon characters. None of those mascots are going to eat anything up!

The memory of Ernie Harwell
and the most amazing words ever to pierce the airwaves
… Jim Northrup comes to bat now against Gibson…now the set by Gibson, we’re ready…here’s a swing and a fly ball to center…here comes Flood, digging hard…he almost fell down…it’s over his head…Cash is rounding third…he scores…Willie Horton rounding third…he scores…Northrup goes into third base…Detroit leads, two-to-nothing.

So many.. but I narrowed it down
- Home whites
- the English D
- The most loyal and knowledgeable fans in all of baseball (STL is right up there with us..maybe Boston.. they’ve gained alot of wagoner’s lately)
- Rich history/tradition
- Joker Marchant Stadium
- Team culture reflects the city’s culture
Chicks dig me, because I rarely wear underwear and when I do it's usually something unusual

Love The Picture!!
Thanks for posting, great photo———not to hard to look at either ;-)
Plus, he's wearing a Pistons shirt
I mean, a Pistons shirt? WTF? Love the randomness, plus Detroit pride. It’s like Matt Stafford always wearing a Tigers cap.

I had to get me one, and I call it my Ozzie hat.

Memories of Dad, Family and GREAT baseball
I started out as a Tiger fan because my Dad would never miss a game on the radio (yup way back when that was the only way to “watch”). Will never forget hearing Ernie Harwell’s voice all summer——-pure joy!! My Dad is gone now but my thrill at watching our Tigers play has grown even stronger. Everything about the Tigers is mesmerizing and exciting!! Especially a good well fought game, both the old and new stadiums, the players, the fact they all appreciate the fans so much. I could go on forever but still wouldn’t be able to put into words completely what is in my heart about the joys the Tigers have given to myself and my family!!! Bless You Boys!! Now on to another winning season :-)
Lots to choose from

nearby pre- and post-game hangouts to Comerica
knowing that FA’s come to play here not because its a big, popular, sparkling city but because its a great organization to be a part of

just the feeling of the downtown atmosphere on gamedays
might be time for another thread on favorite local hangouts before spring training starts
mine is Jacoby’s
There were about three years
Where I ate at Jacoby’s at least once a week. Now I work out in the suburbs and miss it terribly.
"Virtually all tactical ploys—the sacrifice bunt, the stolen base, the hit-and-run—operate on average to reduce run scoring." -- Eric Walker
Where is Jacoby's?
I used to stop in at Hoot Robinsons before games at times. I don’t think it’s there any more. Nemo’s is still there, about 2 blocks east of Tiger stadium, and they still run a bus to games. Park free, get great burgers and suds for cheap, and get a $ 3 bus ride to and from the game. The ride back is free.
"King of Minutiae"
I'm having lunch at Nemo's tomorrow
Jacoby’s is at Fort and Brush, about a 5-10 minute walk from the ballpark. I used to work across the street.

Honorable old-person mention
To the late, great Lindell AC. Famous for being the place where Tigers players went behind the bar and served drinks to the customers after clinching the ’68 pennant, where Alex Karras got in trouble and banned for a year from the NFL for hanging out with mobsters and where Billy Martin punched out one of his own pitchers.

Tradition
Al Kaline, Ernie, Bill Freehan, Norm Cash, Ty Cobb, Trammell/Whitiker double plays, Sparky, a Kirk Gibson home run, old Paw Paw Charlie “Sunday Punch” Maxwell, 1968 & 1984, Ron Leflore, the Lindell AC, Billy Martin, Willie Hernandez, Denny McLain, Jack Morris, Lance Parrish, Chet Lemon’s black glove snagging one from going over the fence or his head first dives into first base, Mickey Lolich’s belly, George Kell, Gates Brown & Willie Horton long balls, Mags, Justin Verlander, Miggy, Mike Illich, Jim Leyland, Alex Avila………and the list goes on & on & on.

The family connection and Nemo's Sports Bar burgers
I grew into a Tiger’s fan because of my older brother, going to my first game at 11 in 2003 (great season, right?). Watching the team grow since then and become one where hope legitimately exists every spring has made me fall in love for good. Watching games during the summer with my family and making several trips to Comerica each year is some of the best bonding I have with all of my family members, not just my older bro.
Favorite things:
-the amazing atmosphere at CoPa
-those delicious burgers at Nemo’s.
-watching JV become JV
-Jim Leyland, for his personal side, not one to agree with his old school approach, yet he still gets the most out of his players and they obviously enjoy playing for him
BTW, I’ve been avidly reading this blog for close to two years now, and I finally made a SBN account. So first comment, hope to become a regular hear in the future!
Welcome and looking forward to your comments in the future.

A few things since I've been a fan
“And he made the catch!” “Oh jackson!”
Armando’s class after the botched perfect game call
Verlander’s no-nos
Helping to Vote Brandon Inge as an all-star
Pudge coming to Detroit when few superstars would
Mr. Illitch’s dedication, to the teams he owns and to the city
My first ever live Tigers game at Comerica with the BYB bunch
Guillen’s stone cold stare at Weaver
Valverde’s dance moves
Watching G$ throw to second
I Like Pie
Everything
Going to games with my Dad when I was a little kid, sitting in the Tiger Den down the 3rd base line. Going to Comerica now, whether it’s a frigid Opening Day, a perfect warm summer night with friends, or a playoff game October that’s on national tv.
The Olde English D, our uniforms, and all of the history it represents. Ty Cobb, Hank Greenberg, Alan Trammell, past World Series titles and more to come in the future. The D also stands for more than just the team or organization, but the entire city of Detroit as well.
And not having to listen to Hawk Harrelson every night is a definite plus.
But seriously, the sights, sounds, feelings, emotional highs and lows, and BYB of course… everything, I love it.
Did we really just sign Prince Fielder? Holllllllllly sh*t.
"emotional highs and lows"
I love that. It sums it up great. I have been a Tigers fan for as long as I can remember, 5 years old in 1962. There have been many up & downs in those years. I still love them all and am proud of the teams.

The fact that in 1942, my grandfather— a man from Southwest Virginia who had never set foot in Detroit— chose to attend the University of Michigan primarily because of his love for the Tigers. He went on to get his PhD and taught for years at Dartmouth, and he died recently. In his obituary, among all of his awards, my family insisted on mentioning that he was a lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers. Couldn’t be more proud.

Being an "Old" Tiger fan means....
1. Missing JP McCarthy on WJR interviewing the Tigers manager in the morning.
2. Being at Grade school during the deciding game of the ‘68 World Series win only to get home to see the Lolitch interview on TV… all of this because there were no night games in the World Series at that time.
3. Watching Norm Cash tag out a runner leading off of first base after he faked the throw back to the pitcher.
4. Always waiting to see if Ernie would call out " There’s a sovenier for a fan from…Toledo" during his broadcasts when a foul ball goes into the stands.
5.Parking along the street by the church to get to Tiger Stadium.
6. …and to think this “Old” Tigers fan has someone in my family now playing for the Tigers! And no I am not Cecil Fielder! LOL!
Still older than you
I was in 10th grade in ‘68. And I remember getting home JUST in time to see the ninth inning, and my mother taking all of us out to Metro airport to greet the team. Of course, since the runway was overridden with crazy Tiger fans (I know you children can’t imagine such a thing as people having that kind of access to an airport runway) the team plane landed at City airport.

I was in the 5th Grade In 68
And I got home in time to see the ninth inning too. We had a TV brought into our class room so we could watch the game. I lived in Wyoming, way back then. My friends & I were out in the street jumping up & down, so Proud.

I was in 8th in '68
Our shop teacher turned on his transistor radio so we could listen. Also, I saw Denny McClain win his 19th at Tiger Stadium. Willie Horton and Bill Freehan homered. Another great memory is how Al Kaline carried the team in ’72 by going 22 for his last 44 at bats.

My favorites
1.) the home whites
2.) the green field
3.) the outfield with the statues
4.) being in the outfield next to Horton’s statue leaning on the railing watching Verlander pitch his no-hiter
5.) sitting in the outfield overlooking the bullpens, there is nothing like it in any of the other stadiums i have been too and i have been to several MLB parks
6.) when i come back to detroit to visit my folks and going down to the stadium, walking in and realizing im home (tears)
7.) since i dont live in detroit anymore the only way i can watch games is to stream them through my Roku box on mlb.tv, its a savior becasue i can choose which broadcast. Always cheers me up to select Fox Sports Detroit broadcast and hear Mario and Rod. The Roku box lets me feel like im back home if only for 3 hours during game time.
8.) Mario and Rod, i have listened to other sports announcers commentate from the other team broadcast on mlb.tv, most are just ignorant and bash detroit fans and detroit baseball
9. Mario and Rod for being objecive, well educated in baseball and being the best announcers in all of baseball
10. Finally the olde english D, best logo in all of baseball

A few more cool things about the Tigers
- 1984
- Gibby
- Tram and Whitaker
- Mark Fidrych
- Justin Verlander
- George Kell
- the bleachers at Tiger stadium
- the hot dogs at Tiger stadium
- the right field “porch” overhang at Tiger stadium
- Herbie Redmond
- Nemo’s before a game- at Tiger stadium or Comerica
- the Old Shillelagh bus
- the walk from Greektown to Comerica
- Rod and Mario
- Jim Leyland, even with some of his stupid lineups
- Having the same owner as the Red Wings
- The way that the Tigers, led by Horton, Kaline, Lolich and McLain, literally helped to pull a community back together that was so bitterly divided and hurt in 1968.

I liked how occasionally he would actually get in a game or two.
Back in the 80’s when that was happening, that was just the coolest thing to me. I was also a pretty big Magnum PI fan though.
Magnum's Tiger hat
When Selleck wore the Tiger hat on TV it caught on and people around the country picked up on it. It didn’t hurt that the Tigers were a hot team in the mid-80’s either.

I love that when I go out and see the Dodgers play the Tigers, not only are there Tigers fans here in LA, but I see folks from BYB in front of me in the stands (Hey, Tigerdog!)
I loved that in 2003, when I saw more live games than I had before or since, every time I went, the Tigers won.
I loved “Stood there like a house by the side of the road.”
I love that it’s a sport that I can read a newspaper recap and totally get it.
I love arguing with my stat-head friends about what crazy schemes they’d pull as manager (one keeps trying to sell me on a four-man rotation).

Class Act
Seeing what a class act Armando Galarraga was, sure do wish he was still in the system. I read his book and after doing so i gained much more respect for Jim Joyce and the class act Galarraga truly was. He could have screamed and yelled at Joyce but no he was classy and shrugged off the mistake that was human error.

Wearing the Old(e) English D proudly to the Cell. And doing so in Wrigley this June!
Also, favorite Tigers memory was either going to a kids baseball clinic in the mid-90’s at Tiger Stadium or watching Verlander whip CC 6-0 on May 13, 2010 for my bachelor party at the CoPa.

To be truthful, I really had no choice. Grandma listened to every game on the radio, whether it was on TV or not. Grandpa’s favorite player was Charlie Gehringer, my dad’s, Al Kaline, mine Alan Trammell, my son’s, Miggy. The Tigers were drummed into my head by all my relatives, male and female, since I was old enough to pay attention. Thank God they did that for me. Hopefully my kids will thank me someday too.

. . . strained meeting for many reasons. Almost nothing in common. But the Tigers were on TV, and before you knew it, we were old friends.
I love the way the organization treats its fans
From the ownership to the players; all are great to us. I also love Tigers fans. We are a respectful group and many of us seem to love the game deeply. We treat players and other fans well and even forgive the most heinous of crimes committed by umpires. We are a classy group and my fellow brethren make me proud to be a fan of the Tigers.

162 games of pure enjoyment
Living in Alabama, I’m away from friends and family, but when the Tiger game starts, I get to sit and watch the game, while texting my father each and every play, and feeling like I’m at home. That’s reason #1.
Reason #2, my old man making fun of Rod Allen every single game.
Reason #3, knowing that all of those years in the late 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, when we sucked, it was all worth it. Because now, I can call myself a tried and true fan of a truly exciting team.
Here’s to sticking with your team…

Bonding with my dad in the garage
My dad smoked a pipe, which my mom forbid in the house. So we would listen to the games while tinkering with the cars in the garage. It did smell better than some of the corridors in Tiger Stadium. His favorite player was Norm Cash. I learned more about baseball than I did about cars. After my dad passed, I would always think of him whenever I was in the bowels of Tiger Stadium. I appreciate the cleanliness of Comerica, but I still miss the atmosphere and the bleachers under the scoreboard, where you could feel on top of the world, with a dry seat for $2.00 during a rain delay.

I want another
The Metrodome sucked. That place was cursed. But standing outside shouting for joy cause my tigs won was awesome. We would go crazy in the face of stupid Twins fans. However, watching the Lions win this year was pretty cool too. I sat behind a die hard Lions fan from Winnipeg. That guy was insane. I screamed to every Lions jersey I saw all the way to the car.
These are a few of my favourite things.
Home Uniforms
A lot of people have brought this up, and I agree. What’s more classic than the Olde English D? I’m a high school baseball coach, and the jerseys this year are going to look a heck of a lot like those ones (save for them being in the school’s colours).
Tiger Stadium
It was a cathedral; a place of baseball worship. I remember walking out of the tunnel the first time and being utterly amazed at how far across the other side was. The concrete, the dark corridors, the smell of cigar smoke (and my mom’s complaints about it). Comerica’s nice, and it’ll develop a mystique of its own in time… but The Corner hosted baseball for over a century in one form or another, and that’s gotta count for something.
The Players
Some of the best players ever to take the field were Tigers — and not just the best technical players either, although Cobb and Greenberg and Kaline do pretty well. Guys like Willie Horton and Sparky Anderson, and more recently Brandon Inge, have done a ton for the community.
The Owner
Mike Ilitch occasionally gets flak for being too secretive, not granting too many interviews, and so on… but I personally wouldn’t want it any other way. He cuts the cheques and trusts the GM to do the heavy lifting. And the fact that Ilitch once played minor-league ball in the Tigers’ system adds to it, too.
The Uniqueness
Alright, maybe this applies more to me than other people, but living in Canada, you have to be a real baseball fan to root for the Tigers. Sure, someone in Toronto or Timmins or Trois-Rivieres might call themselves a Jays fan, but that’s because we’re Canadian, and it feels like a bit of an obligation more than anything. When someone here finds out I’m a Tiger fan, they always ask why, and I get to show my southwest-Ontarian roots.
Lakeland
Cute town, great stadium, been there for decades. If you’ve never gone, WOW, you really need to. Get there early — gates open at 11 am — and totally nerd-out.
Alright, I could go on, but I’ll leave the rest of the gushing to people more eloquent than me. Eat ’em up, Tigers.
Texas Tiger Fan
I have lived in Texas almost all my life but have always been a Tiger fan… just because…
1) Lolich – big guy; but he could pitch!
2) Watching Al Kaline throw someone out from RF
3) Norm Cash coming to bat with a piano leg against Nolan Ryan
4) Tram and Lou: wow
5) Sparky: “Mike Laga will make you forget every other power hitter you ever saw”. Sparky had a way with words…
6) The Bird- what a season!
7) Get scraps of Tigers news from The Sporting News; catching faint echoes of WJR 1000 miles away
8) Aurelio Rodriguez and Ed Brinkman – now that was a “good field/no hit” combo!
9) Frank Tanana/Larry Herndon 1-0 over the Jays in 87.
10) Jack Morris no hitter to kickoff the 1984 surge
Got to visit Tiger Stadium once (Tigs beat Orioles that day) then went to CoPa back in 2010 (another victory over the O’s; Danny Worth’s first Major HR). Also got a burger at Nemos!
too many more to list.. looking forward to 2012!
The fans, the players, the ownership, the stadium(s), the city, BYB
and always, forever, the OED!
For Ernie. For.Sparky. For Magglio. For ME
The one vendor: HOOOOOOOOT DOOOOOOOOGS ANNNNNNND Peanuts
and hearing him on television when I can’t make it to a game.
oh, and like Ian mentioned, that magical Magglio home run.
Dave Dombrowski's polo shirts
Seriously, who needs jerseys when you have a DD classic?
