Are You Interested in Fantasy Baseball?
Title edited and bumped to the front page. I added a poll to gauge the amount of interest in a fantasy baseball league among the BYB readership. Feel free to add any additional thoughts or suggestions in the comments. --Rob
Also, as Tigers22 mentioned in the comments, the official BYB league run by yours truly will launch in March with more details then. --Kurt
Hey all-
I was wondering if there were any openings/interest in fantasy baseball among the BYB community. I play almost religiously, and the league of friends I usually play with sort of disbanded this year. I thought it might be cool to play with some of the people here, so I just figured I'd post a note and "take the temp" of the community. Anyone interested?
Go Tigers, of course! (p.s. Is this more appropriate as a FanShot? I wasn't sure.)

I would probably play if we do one...
Yahoo is place of choice for me.

Kurt mentioned he was going to do one
but not sure how many spots would be open in it. I’m a big fantasy baseball guy, so I think it’d be fun to be in one from the BYB community as well.
Did we really just sign Prince Fielder? Holllllllllly sh*t.
it would be fun
i usually play yahoo as well….roto, h2h, whatever type of draft. i just thought it would be fun to add another dimension of baseball discussion/competition. we’ll see if this catches on.
its a great idea! since we get a lot of new people on the site it ll be a good way of getting discussions(arguments!) going.

I would be interested.
I discovered BYB and WIIM a few months ago, so I have yet to follow BYB during a season. I would give up a spot for a veteran follower though.

I have a spot in my league
if you can’t find anything.. It’s just with my close friends up here at school, but you’re more than welcome if you want. I’ve always wanted to get a BYB league going, as well. I remember 2 years ago Kurt ran one.. looked like a good time
Chicks dig me, because I rarely wear underwear and when I do it's usually something unusual
i dont understand what a Rotisseree (meh too lazy to spell today) league is
so H2H would be fine to me

rotissere
rotissere is a composite score in various catogories.in a 12 team league the max score in a catogory is 12 the least is 1.if you and another manager are tied for first in a catagory you split the points, its not 50/50 there is a math formula that figures it out.

yahoo leagues
you can start your own private league in yahoo and send out invites to those who want to join.you can do either rotisserie or head to head, the draft is the same format for both.you should limit the number of teams you draft to a max of 2 or 3 your first time.i like the fantasy baseball beacuse you need to know some basic stats to be competitive.some thongs to know if its your first go around draft hitting first, its very deep in pitching.

I'm IN
Keep me posted!

I voted other.
My wife said if I play fantasy baseball again, she wants a divorce. So I need to think about it and get back to you.

what if I send her an autographed photo of Donner?
by Kurt Mensching on Feb 18, 2012 3:21 PM EST up reply actions
Just to see Donner holding a pen w/o an apposing digit would be worth it!
Honestly, I waste way to much time in fantasy leagues. I hope to be listening to the Tigers more on the radio this year, than sitting in front of my laptop wondering who I should use as a starting pitcher in my league. I just bought a kayak yesterday, ( Hobie Tandem Island). Hopefully, I spend more nights on the shore of the Big Lake listening to Verlander being lights out than worrying about what trades I can make to make my team better. I just get a little to intense in fantasy leagues.
If Donner does sign his own autograph, I’d pay the full price of admission!

Looking for teams
I started a Yahoo league and am looking for teams. It is Pedro the Lion themed, but anyone is welcome to join. If you like David Bazan’s music, awesome, if not, please do not feel intimidated, you are still welcome to join. It is called ‘The Only Reason I Feel Secure.’
I'm not too familiar with fantasy baseball
but I’d partake anyway. Ideally I’d like something where you had to make a move or two every week, not spend hours every day on the thing.
Definitely in
Strongly prefer (and voted for) Yahoo, Head-to-Head, 12 teams
But I do have one ESPN league I’m in, so I’m able to do either one
Did we really just sign Prince Fielder? Holllllllllly sh*t.
I'd be in
Usually use Yahoo, and I only do H2H
it seems like there's enough interest for a couple of leagues!
i don’t know what Kurt’s setup is usually like, but most people seem to prefer head to head. i might just go ahead and create a league tonight, unless somebody really relishes taking the reigns and being commish. i don’t care either way.
i’ll be back to post the league information and password, but here’s what i’m thinking:
12 team h2h-it’s a much more “fair” way to measure a good pitching performance.
-traditional draft, on a weekend afternoon in march
-5×5, with OBP subsituted for AVG and Quality Starts substituted for Wins (this is the format we had in my other league and it worked really well, especially with Quality Starts
any suggestions? anybody else want to take the reigns? can’t wait to get started!

I only play Head 2 Head.
I prefer ESPN, but could live with Yahoo.
Up in the air about fantasy this year
I don’t know if I’ve ever done fantasy baseball back to back years, but I’ve never done a live draft. It’ll be all I do after autodraft gave me two 2B with my first two picks last yeat, one of them Chase Utley.
Fan of the Detroit Tigers, Lions and Red Wings.
Of course
I don’t usually post on here, but for fantasy baseball I will comment. Head to Head I have always felt keeps everyone in it the longest, but really I’m down for whatever. Although, I will say ESPN is amazing at fantasy sports in particular fantasy baseball.
I agree
I play Fantasy Baseball on both Yahoo and ESPN,I think Espn is far and away a better site to play.
Cory Smith
Same here
I’m always hesitant to join leagues that aren’t ESPN. Irrational bias on my part.. but to me, ESPN is head and shoulders above the rest.
Chicks dig me, because I rarely wear underwear and when I do it's usually something unusual
see, I completely disagree
but to each their own… I play in both, but I’ve always been a Yahoo guy. Like their setup, and this year their rankings seem to be WAY better than ESPN’s.
Did we really just sign Prince Fielder? Holllllllllly sh*t.
Yahoo's rankings are the worst
this year than ever before,Espn actually has multiple "experts"ranking players, while yahoo literally copy mlb.com’s rankings (which are way off also).Either way it doesn’t matter to me due to the fact that I (and I’m sure you all do too) have my own strategy when it comes to Fantasy drafts.
Cory Smith
hmmm, ESPN just seems to copy Yahoo, at least that's what I've noticed over the years
So I wouldn’t really call them head and shoulders above the rest.

Espn puts time and resources into fantasy baseball
each year more than the last.I play both sites but I get most of my data and info from completely different web sites

I'd be down for a league
I voted for H2H because that’s what I usually do but I haven’t really done roto either. I feel like it would be fun to try.

Absolutely, put me down
I voted for H2H, never really tried roto

fo sho
I will play on any site. Just want to get into some leagues with people with common interests.
i just opened a league on yahoo
since all of this fantasy talk received a fairly quick, spirited response, i decided to just go for it and start a league. who cares if it’s only the middle of February?
the structure is pretty much yahoo default, and what i mentioned above (sorry for those of you who mentioned ESPN, yahoo is what i know best). 12 team, modified 5×5, head 2 head. the draft is set for March 18th (sunday), but that can be changed according to the schedules of all involved.
league name: BYBaseball 2012
password: blessyouboys
any and all from the community are welcome! i’d prefer people who plan to stay active all season. hopefully we’ll have a great season of baseball and friendly competition!
Just tried to join
got an error message that said “this league is not registered in this game”
Chicks dig me, because I rarely wear underwear and when I do it's usually something unusual
league ID# 64913
i think that’s what should be entered, not the league name
Roto Rocks!
But H2H is OK too (for girls). I want to play in a BYB league, but I’m torn because one of my favorite things about being in an open Yahoo league means I have a good chance at being the only Tiger fan in the league and have an easier time stocking the lineup with Cats. But whatever. I’m really good at fantasy baseball so bring it on because I like to brag on a blog viewed by (cough) millions.
P.S. I somehow know that this is totally wrong, but I really want to beat Tokarz in a nerd baseball game!

OK I did create a league
And it will be head to head and there will be at the minimum 14 teams because 1) I like bigger leagues, and 2) I said so.
However, I’m not yet ready to stock the league with byb readers who will kick my butt. Details on that will come later.
by Kurt Mensching on Feb 18, 2012 11:09 PM EST reply actions
Yes,but ive never played before.
So I don’t know how the different format play out.
Draft Date and time
I just realized after I signed up that the draft is during the weekend that I’m moving. If we could move it back a few days or a week that would be cool. If not I’m sure I can figure a way to get it done.
i'm sure it can be changed no problem
i’ll wait for the league to fill up, and then we’ll work out a time that works for everyone. one week earlier or one week later sounds probable.
just signed up for your league
hey i hope that’s ok, by the way. looking forward to playing.

Fantasy
Has anyone here tried Baseball Manager (BBM)? In my humble opinion, it’s the best game out there. You play head to head every day, 162 games and every day you get your results (roughly based on Bill James’ Runs Created formula) in a “newspaper” format. Now lest anyone get the idea I’m some kind of shill (and I won’t include a link), let me point out the negatives. It’s not free (except for a scaled down version which isn’t as much fun), it takes up a LOT of time if you want to be the best (requires daily managing for the most part), it’s draft is a little funky, and each player can only use the number of appearances he accumulates in real life vs. each handed pitcher. If you want maximum realism, I think you’d like this game. If you are much more casual about fantasy (or are being threatened with divorce, lol), it’s not for you.
Fair Assessment - Sort of
I wouldn’t say it is too complicated. It’s actually fairly straightforward. However, I’d say it is way more time consuming. I guess that’s why I was curious if anyone had tried it. I played many years ago for several years, and was thinking of getting back in, but it is a definite time commitment. I love the realism of the game, but how much time should fantasy take from “real life”? Lol
Def interested, have been doing Fantasy Baseball on Yahoo every year since 2006

Figured I'd throw this out there..
Not trying to spam or anything, but I know a lot of my fellow BYBers have stated you wanted to play fantasy baseball.. If Tealy213’s league is full and you want to play, my ESPN H2H deep keeper league just lost 2 owners and I’m looking for replacements..
Let me know if you’re seriously interested. One team has JV, McCann and Bautista.. the other Halladay, Reyes, Hosmer.. It’s competitive but laid back and just for fun (no $$ or anything). We’ve had the same group of guys for a few years now..
