Nats sign Edwin Jackson for one year
Former Tiger All Star starting pitcher Edwin Jackson has signed a one year contract with the Washington Nationals, said by Ken Rosenthal of Foxsports.com to be in the $ 10 million range. Washington now features a rotation with Jackson, Gio Gonzalez, Steven Strasbourg, Chien Ming Wang, and Jordan Zimmerman. The Nats are said to be interested in trading John Lannan, who has just lost his arbitration case and will earn $ 5 million in 2012.

This offseason keeps getting better and better

You think Kotchman is worse than what they had at 1B?
Or they could’ve done better. Maybe Derek Lee?
Without Casey, they probably use some combo of LaPorta and Santana at 1B.
I think they’ve upgraded somewhat, though they don’t add much power from a power position.

Compared to Prince? Yeah, he's way worse
I’m not impressed with Kotchman’s numbers whatsoever, especially when Baseball Nation pointed out how Tampa’s turf field helped his average and OBP skyrocket last season. He has a good glove, but I don’t think he will be that great of a hitter. Santana and LaPorta have much more potential (especially Santana). The fewer ABs for them, the better.

Once his BABIP normalizes
he will just be a defensive replacement. Although for the Indians, I guess he’s better than Laporta at this point.

Why not $10 mil to Jackson
We were expecting Oswalt to have much better numbers than Jackson. If he was willing to sign a 1 year deal with the Nats, why didn’t the Tigers give him that kind of cash. I’d have no problem with him being the fifth starter for now.
sorry... Were we? that was a question, not a statement.

Because Oswalt >>> Jackson
That’s big money for EJax.

Heyman says he turned down $30M over three years

If so, EJax is nothing if not confident.
still...
A one-year deal on a year where the Tigers seem to be playing with house money? I’d have gone for it, even at $10 million. If any of the kids start panning out, they can be injury fill-ins (if we have any) or they can enjoy the playoffs as dominant, 6th/7th inning guys and take Jackson’s slot in 2013.
Other than the cash, which we’re willing to burn in exchange for a title shot, what’s the downside to signing him?
Edwin will produce 3-4 wins of value
That’s worth 10 million dollars.

This is good
Means the Tigers can pick up Edwin at the trading deadline.

Why would a team with an outside shot at the playoffs
be guaranteed to trade one of their better players to Detroit at the deadline?
Because they won't have an outside shot by the trade deadline

Depends on this wild card situation
Having two wild cards really expands the field…not many will be sellers.

This is true
I think that the Nats are still a year away from being a real contender, especially in that division. I’ve got Atlanta and Philly (in that order) well above the other three clubs, kind of like NY and Boston but with normal payrolls. The NL East is quietly turning into one of the better divisions in baseball.

I think that the Tribe played over their heads early last season
Rob said that on one of our podcasts and I totally agree. They might still be the closest challenger to the Tigers, but they’re a sub .500 club, IMO. They could easily field a lineup with all lefties against our RHP rotation, though.

They are all Kipnises
Last year was their best shot. KC and / or Minn should be the distant challenger.

Lannan
I immediately went to fangraphs to ck him out bein hes lft handed…but a 5k 3walk per nine guy that his only pos atribute is that he is a groundball guy…that would likely have everything pulled to the lft side…no thanks..id rather start the season w the no walk fb homer prone Adam Wilk

Jeff Larish signs with the O's
Minor league deal, not even an invite to spring training.
I thought Jeff did reasonably well with Philly’s AAA club last year.
One time fourth rated prospect in the Tiger org, and one of the top two position players.
