Ex-Tiger Joel Zumaya has apparent elbow injury
MLB.com reports that Joel Zumaya abandoned his mound session early today due to pain.
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Twins right-hander Joel Zumaya left his throwing session early on Saturday with an apparent right elbow injury.
Zumaya, facing live hitters for the first time this spring, exited his bullpen session after about 15 pitches and walked off the field with head trainer Rick McWane.
Zumaya, who declined to speak to reporters, is scheduled to get an MRI exam on Sunday, according to Twins manager Ron Gardenhire and general manager Terry Ryan.
The story has more, including quotes from Ryan.
"Obviously, he felt something that was discomforting, so he came off, which was the right thing,"
It's not polite to make jokes about anyone's injury, so we'll refrain from that. However, you had to expect Zumaya would have something come up, based on his time in Detroit. It's unfortunate, but that's just the way it is.

Hope he has good insurance
I bet his medical expenses have totaled more than his career earnings.
And they laughed at me when I took "end of February" in the pool.

Looks likes he's not the only ex-Tiger in pain
Scott Sizemore’s knee popped today (no specifics yet), and Carlos Guillen’s calf is bothering him.

There is no offseason.

It is too bad for Joel, though. He would have had a hell of a career had his body not betrayed him.

Scott Sizemore has a left knee sprain
awaiting MRI. Report was that there was “an audible pop”. Sounds nasty.

Wow
poor guy.
Chicks dig me, because I rarely wear underwear and when I do it's usually something unusual
The human arm . . .
. . . apparently really can’t throw a 103 mph fastball.
Am I surprised? No, I'm not.
Am I glad that he’s not pitching in the MLB? Not at all, I want Joel to realize his potential.
Would I be okay if the Tigers dont face a healthy Zumaya this summer? Yes, I’d be okay with that.

Bad deal.
Doesn’t matter who he plays for. Zumaya was a good guy, a dominant pitcher when healthy, and a good Tiger. He might not have anything left after this, and that will be a shame. This news makes me extremely sad.

You people are ghouls
Let’s get this straight: 2006 doesn’t happen without Zumaya. I will never forget him and Rodney blowing them away in Yankee Stadium in Game 2 to get us a split.
There’s nothing funny here—the kid’s career is probably over. I am grateful for the memories, and wish him the best. The rest of you can jump in a lake.
"you people"?
One person said they were smiling. The other 18 comments disagreed. Keep it in perspective.

I was talking about the 4 who were cracking jokes
Not you, or the rest who felt bad for him, Kurt.
I’m sorry, I should have differentiated better so I didn’t seem like I was lumping everyone on the thread in with those guys My bad.

No jokes from me.
It’s just too sad. Predicable, but still very sad. Poor Zoom. :(

Unfortunately....
…some of Zoom’s problems were self induced, from the video game injury to the “moving boxes”/ATV incident, which arguably cost him a career.
Almost blew off the comments on this article ...
Almost blew off the comments on this article, as I assumed there would be a whole lot of kicking a guy when he’s down going on. You guys (almost) all proved me wrong. Somehow, I feel a little bit better about being a human (at least for a little while ….)
Never understood why he didn’t try to shut it down for a whole year and recover fully. Seems like he always tried to hurry back. He was still young when all this started. Sad to see this again.
Probably because he was under contract
If someone is paying him money to pitch, then he’s got to do everything he can do to pitch.

probably also
Because he doesn’t seem to have ever been a person to take his time in anything. If he was going to do something, he was going to do it as fast and as much as he could if he wanted to. “Taking his time” seems anathema to Joel.
I’ll always remember him as he was in 2006. Holy crap he was amazing. #heavysigh

Great memories of opening day, 2006
Kenny Rogers left a tight game after 6IP. Zumaya takes the mound in the bottom of the 7th with a 2-1 lead. Walks the leadoff hitter, but then whiffs the next two batters. Gets out of the inning after a single and groundout. Retires the side 1-2-3 in the 8th and hands the game over to Rodney. His stuff was filthy that day.

Torn UCL
Out for 12-18 months. That’s it for Joel, no way he comes back at 30 years old after not having any significant game experience for six years.
What a terrible shame.

"Virtually all tactical ploys—the sacrifice bunt, the stolen base, the hit-and-run—operate on average to reduce run scoring." -- Eric Walker
Feel absolutely awful for him
Can’t even imagine the frustration he feels right now

Thanks for posting the pic, JohnMoz
That’s how I prefer to remember Zumaya, the unstoppable force he was in 2006.

Love that pic
Brings back so many great memories. Such a shame about these injuries, he really was a special talent that helped lead the ’06 team to the WS, and he will always mean something to me & other Tigers fans.
Maybe he should train with MSU alum (and MLB record holder for games pitched in a season, among other relief pitcher durability marks), Dr. Mike Marshall! http://drmikemarshall.com/

Just echoing what's already been said
but it’s sucks having to hear that about Joel, couldn’t imagine the kind of ovation he would’ve got coming out of the Twins (though I can’t stand them) bullpen. A guy with his kind of talent never to see the field again makes me cringe not just because of his talent but because he’s a sincere guy off the field as he was on. You can’t imagine someone takes another flyer out on him 100 mph can destroy an arm and it got the best of Joel in the long run.
Take off your white wig, put down your gavel and stop judging...
according to yahoo
he’s got a torn ligament and will miss the entire season.

I Like Pie
I'd send him to Dr. Mike Marshall and see if his techniques could help
I’ve heard Mike Marshall on my local show in Lansing (Mad Dog in the Morning) discuss Joel Zumaya and others that keep submitting themselves to surgeons. I know Marshall had that long ago reputation as a flake but I’ve never understood why some injury prone putcher like Zumaya hasn’t given him a chance. Marshall pitched into his mid 40’s using his Kiniseology techniques. What is there to lose if a team takes a chance on hiring hime to “fix” a broken major leaguer?
