What would it take to get Cabrera?

Let me set the record straight before going any further in this fanpost, I am in NO WAY advocating that the Tigers should trade Miguel Cabrera nor am I even hinting that the team is entertaining the idea of putting him on the block. I am a HUGE, ASTRONOMICALLY BIG fan of Cabrera, what he brings to the Tigers & this city, his body of work (no pun intended) and what he has done and meant to this team but since Prince will be here til my 34th birthday I just want to have some fun with this. I am simply writing this to get a consensus from fellow Tiger fans on what it would take for the Tigers to consider a trade for the big man. Again this nothing more than a bored baseball fan looking for some reaction until spring training starts in a matter of a few weeks.

Be that I’m looking for anything to talk about on the Tigers, I wanted to write this to see if my expectations on return were reasonable and what you, the BYB conglomerate, think would be a reasonable trade for the best hitter in the game. Miguel’s time with the Tigers, on the field, has been nothing short of magical. Since coming over in 2007 he owns a .322/.403/.573/.976 slash with an OPS+ of 158. His yearly averages include 41 doubles, 35 HR, 115 RBI and he’s increased his walks every year as he had well over 100 (108) this past year.

Star-divide

This is what I think the Tigers could get out of other teams should they inquire about Cabrera’s availability:

The Rays:

Tampa has never been confused with a team that mashes the ball but they’ve managed to be relevant and compete in a division that includes the Yankees and Red Sox and to a small degree the Blue Jays. This is possible because of their phenomenal pitching that they behold and Joe Maddon (the best manager in all of baseball in my belief) being able to get the best out of every player. I believe that should the Rays be interested they could swing a trade that involves Evan Longoria, Matt Moore and BJ Upton while getting Miggy and Nick Castellanos in return.

The Dodgers:

For a team that is going through the current mess that Dodgers are in, it wouldn’t hurt their chances of reviving their club having a player like Cabrera to bring Dodger fans back to the park. I’m a huge fan of Clayton Kershaw and Matt Kemp, this trade would’ve been more doable had they both not had career years won the Cy and MVP respectively last year but along with Dee Gordon (top SS prospect) the Tigers would return with a package of Cabrera and Jacob Turner OR Cabrera, Austin Jackson and Casey Crosby.

Any other ideas for trades?Again these are all hypothetical and just something to talk about since I’m bored out of my mind waiting for Spring Training to start. So before any of you start in with “you’re stupid for trying to trade Miggy” and “what the hell is your problem?" comments please just remember that this is suppose to be a fun way to talk about something since the biggest news out there is our Cuban hopeful is “hoping” to play in Miami and we’ve brought back Dlugach.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of the Bless You Boys writing staff.

Maybe I'm crazy,

but I feel like either one of those trades amounts highway robbery in favor of the Tigers.

If the Tigers wound up trading Cabrera I would imagine it would be for a massive package of prospects, as opposed to a “stars for stars” blockbuster.

AND

What do the dodgers or rays have to gain by trading their best players for one guy? Gut the team to wind up with… less?

by MakeItTrizzle on Feb 9, 2012 5:02 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

Very true

I suppose I’m just thinking about it in a way to see what Cabrera’s worth would be rather than an actual trade…

That's fine

You still seem to have way overestimated his value. A Cy Young winner plus a (could have been) MVP? The game’s top prospect plus it’s best third baseman and an all star (or close) caliber center fielder?

by MakeItTrizzle on Feb 9, 2012 5:20 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

Zaref didn’t propose that the Tigers send one guy in either of those scenarios. And he used as many disclaimers about the legitimacy of his proposals as a person can use. A response including both angry-all-caps and sarcastic ellipses was not warranted.

by cloud wall on Feb 9, 2012 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

Wasn't supposed to be angry all caps.

I was using my phone on the train home from work and I must have hit the shift key twice.

I know that there are other players included in the trade, but when Austin Jackson (or Turner/Crosby) is the throw in for Kemp and Kershaw, I think that’s a pretty big overestimation of Miguel’s value.

Miguel Cabrera for Kemp straight up from a value/ability perspective? Sure. Cabrera and Verlander for Kemp and Kershaw (again from an ability/value/production perspective)? Sure. But he wanted to hear what people though, and I think that even looking at an ability perspective he’s overvaluing Cabrera. And if he can’t deal with a little poetic license in the inappropriate use of punctuation for snark/sarcasm purposes, I doubt he would like this website very much.

It was not my intention to come off as hostile or mean spirited, and if I did I apologize. I was just taking part in the fun by saying how much I though Cabrera was worth.

by MakeItTrizzle on Feb 9, 2012 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

I understand MIT

It’s all good, this post will be met with a whole lot of ridicule and responses that can be taken as hostile but I’m not a person who thakes things personally,if you feel that I’ve overrated Cabrera by all means please state that. I have been on this blog long enough to undestand the intentions of the people on here and I believe that everyone is entitled to their opinion.

CW I appreciate you looking out for the meaning of this post, I know that few people will understand the premise of this post but I’m not offended by any mean spirited remarks anyone on here will post, however I did try to minimize the ridicule by posting the disclaimers.

SO by replying saying he didn't take offense

he really meant that he took great offense? What would it have meant if he had said that he did take offense? that he really didn’t? Holy bizarro backwards world Batman.

something I have been plotting in the back of my mind for a couple of years. I haven’t come up with a good way to accomplish this, short of kidnapping.

this is the exact same thing i thought i was about to read.

…now if we can just figure out how to do it.

here’s what I’ve got so far:
1 – identify target – Asdrubal Cabrera
2 – ???
3 – profit.

Just so you know...

Because of his ludicrously team-friendly contract, Longoria most likely has the most trade value of any player. Matt Moore’s contract is also absurd (although he isn’t a proven star yet like Longoria, he’s the #1 prospect in MLB right now) No way they swing that deal even if the entire Rays front office was put under anesthesia.

It would have to be a historic overpay by any one.

From the Rays, it would be, Longoria, Moore, Jennings, and another top prospect. From the Dodgers, it would be Kershaw and Kemp. Anything short of those and I’m not even slightly interested. The Yankees would be Cano, the killer B’s, and Pineda. From the Rangers, it would be Andrus, Feliz, Kinsler, and a top prospect. These would not be for Cabrera and a prospect. No one would want to make this trade, so I’m going to leave it alone.

by JacksTigers on Feb 9, 2012 10:52 PM EST reply actions

I can't for the life of me understand why we're having this conversation

but Kershaw and Kemp? JT… would you trade Miggy and Verlander for Adrian Gonzalez? Just doesn’t make sense. An MVP caliber CF and Cy Young/MVP caliber lefty SP? Not a chance.

Andrus, Feliz, Kinsler, plus let’s say Leonys Martin. What?! Their 2 starting middle infielders, a starting pitcher, and a top OF prospect? Nah man. Listen, Miggy is my favorite player in the MLB, but you wouldn’t give up that many starting players in your lineup to get one player. The dude is very very very good…. but you still gotta think along the lines of what we gave the Marlins for Miggy, or what Boston gave up to get Gonzalez.

Again, I can’t believe I got sucked in to this conversation. It’s a scenario I don’t even want to think about and is completely unrealistic at this point in time.

Did we really just sign Prince Fielder? Holllllllllly sh*t.

Like I said, historic overpay

If you want my superstar, I want too of yours.

by JacksTigers on Feb 10, 2012 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

And like I said, not realistic

that’s not how baseball works man, sorry. As momo stated earlier, moving a hitter like Cabrera would be a salary move or a rebuilding move… both of which you receive a package of valuable prospects for, not MVP caliber all-stars.

Did we really just sign Prince Fielder? Holllllllllly sh*t.

by tigers22 on Feb 10, 2012 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

I don't want to give away Cabrera unless

we get two of him. In other words, I don’t want to trade Cabrera. I don’t want it to be realistic, I don’t want to trade Cabrera. I don’t think that you’re getting it.

by JacksTigers on Feb 15, 2012 9:13 PM EST up reply actions

What you obviously mean

Is that we should really accept Matt Joyce for Miguel Cabrera otherwise you wouldn’t have posted that it would take Longoria, Moore, Jennings and a top prospect. Otherwise you wouldn’t have posted these proposals…

by wilsonm24 on Feb 10, 2012 10:54 AM EST up reply actions

Well

That day we were in a bizarro reverse world where everything we said was opposite of what we really meant. You started it when you said that when someone said that they didn’t take offense to something they really did take offense to it, otherwise they wouldn’t have said they didn’t take offense.

If you don’t like the rules of Bizarro reverse world then you shouldn’t have taken us there.

by wilsonm24 on Feb 16, 2012 8:02 AM EST up reply actions

Contract value is a very real factor

Cabrera is due 21M+ for the next four years. There are a pretty limited number of teams willing to take on a 4yr/85M contract, but it would certainly be attractive to the right team in the right position.

Cabrera being traded would have to be either a Tiger’s payroll slashing or a reallocation of resources. If it’s a payroll move, it would be for a heap of prospects to a team that’s contending today. I doubt that we would consider punting with our current roster any time in the next few years unless there is a change in ownership/direction.

If it’s reallocation of resources, we’d need to find the right trade situations. Looking at the organization as a whole, our major positions of need are OF, 2B, and SS. The other positions have either a solid, young incumbent (like Avila at C, Fielder at 1B, Boesch/Jackson in RF/CF) or prospects on the way (Castellanos at 3B, Turner/Smyly…etc at SP). Our trade partner would have to have organizational strength at one or more of the positions listed and weakness at 1B or 3B (depending on how which position you consider Cabrera.)

Somebody like Texas might make a good trade partner. Their middle infield is strong with Andrus and Kinsler. They are moderately weak at 1B. Their farm is busting with middle infield prospects being blocked by Andrus and Kinsler. Detroit would look to acquire Andrus or Kinsler so that Texas could promote somebody like Jurickson Profar (their top prospect, a SS) or Rougned Odor (#5 prospect in the org, SS/2B)…although both players probably aren’t MLB ready today.

So, if we’re tossing out names – Texas gets Cabrera…Detroit gets Kinser or Andrus and Moreland….maybe some prospects to fluff the deal.

I like to think of myself as a trendsetter

Somebody that can actually put myself in the other team’s shoes when talking trade. It makes the off-season boring because most of these absurd trade suggestions don’t benefit the other team a lick – thus, would never happen.

I hear ya... and thank you for that.

most of these trades talked about hear are video game and fantasy baseball trades — and bad ones at that.

I tried to bring some objective thoughts a conversation about how many games Miggy would realistically play at 3rd this year in another thread. It wasn’t well received. Sometimes what would be best for the Tigers just is not logical or possible. Of course, I always want the best possible outcome for our organization, but I also want to look at things realistically and objectively.

I don't see the Tigers trading Cabrera for the next couple of years.

But they might want to trade him before he becomes a free agent in four years. And at that time i could see them trading him for 3 or 4 top prospects to restock the roster.

by swish330 on Feb 10, 2012 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

Technically Darvish is a prospect

since he has yet to pitch in MLB. Just saying.
More seriously Texas is the last place to trade Miggy if we have any intention to make the World Series in the next few years.

The question of a Miggy trade

is somewhat interesting, although it seems to be stated in this post in more of a tell-me-something-nice-about-my-team-so-I-can-feel-good kind of way,.

In the unlikely event the Tigers find themselves out of the pennant race before the trade deadline sometime in the next few years, Cabrera might be the best way to trim payroll for the future (already paying Verlander and Fielder $20M+) AND receive some key pieces for the coming years. We´d have to pay some of VMart’s salary and he wouldn’t bring that much in return.

The big question would be, and I hope you’ll like this Zaref, would anyone have enough major league ready talent and/or next to sure thing prospects to get Cabrera, and if they did, would they be in a position (looking for that last piece to that year´s WS run?) to give them up for Cabby? I’m sure I wouldn’t be able to do any intelligent speculating on who that might be right now.

I think that if you can get a top 3 SP and a 2 future long term starters at key positions, it would certainly have to be considered, especially if they had a lot of club control years left on them.

by Dergunna Wavimin on Feb 11, 2012 12:59 PM EST reply actions

If Miggy is a total bust at third base, trading him or Victor may be an option

but unless and until then, he’s going nowhere.

If and when that were to happen, the Rays won’t/ can’t afford to pay Miggy. Pity, because they could part with more top level prospects than any other club for the right player.

The Dodgers would be a logical trading partner, but they’ll have to sort out their ownership mess first, which should be sorted out within a few months, and the new ownership will have the money to spend. In fact, they would be one of the few clubs that may be able to take on that kind of salary. Others might be the Jays, the Cubs, and the Black Sox (but that ain’t gonna happen, even if hell does freeze over).

The Dodgers have just extended Kemp, and they’re surely going to extend Kershaw if at all possible. Andre Ethier would be available, but it wouldn’t take Miggy to get him. The Dodgers don’t really match up well with what the Tigers need, IMO, which is good position prospects- blue chippers.

The Angels would have been a great fit- until they signed Albert Pujols.

The Cubs might give up Starlin Castro, Josh Vitters, and some other top prospects and the Tigers may find that appealing. They talked about those guys when Granderson was on the block.

they'd move Victor before Miggy

And I agree with the Dodgers not matching up well with us. All the Kemp and Kershaw talk is just nonsense. Ain’t gunna happen people.

Cleveland needs their glory days back

Victor 1B, Jhonny SS to tribe, and Asdrubal to tigers. Fills wants and needs for both. And we get Asdrubal.

by manic in Detroit on Feb 11, 2012 6:13 PM EST reply actions

This wouldn't really do it

unless they got Sabathia or Cliff Lee. But they would feel better about themselves. They are pretty depressed over there, and Asdrubal always looks unhappy.
But wait, there’s more! We will include Inge who can teach Chisenhall to play 3B.
