Obviously, the injury suffered by Miguel Cabrera is the biggest news of the day. (Here's the original thread on that.) Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Cabrera's eye was "black and blue" and would probably be swollen shut. Cabrera was set to have stiches, and Ryan Field of Fox Sports Detroit reported X-rays were negative. So, WHEW. We'll update when there's more to say, obviously.
The Tigers led the Phillies 3-0 after the first four and a half innings, but Max Scherzer became the first Tigers' pitcher to walk out for the fifth inning and it did not go well for him. All four runs were scored in the inning after he gave up three consecutive singles to lead off the inning, then a triple sandwiched between a pair of sac flies. For the game, Scherzer had five strikeouts and allowed six hits.
In relief, right-hander Collin Balester added another scoreless inning to his resume.
On the other end of things, it's a good thing Clete Thomas hangs his hat on outfield defense. An 0-for-4 day with four strikeouts did not bolster his case for the roster. Then again, Brandon Inge went 0-for-4 to drop his average to a an Inge-like .207. So ... yeah. Things can change fast in spring. Austin Jackson struck out three times.
And -- because I know you like to rubberneck -- former Tiger David Purcey struck out one and allowed a hit in one inning on the mound. His ERA is 2.57.
