Competition for 2nd base job?

Stay connected for news and updates

Has anyone heard or read the comments made by Dave Dombrowski about Brandon Inge's performance at 2nd base so far? After the 5th game of ST Dombrowski said that Inge has looked "phenomenal" at 2nd base, yes thats right phenomenal! He went on to say that he thinks the fans will be shocked when they see how well Inge plays 2nd. Doesnt that sound a lot like Inge already has the job in the bag? Dombrowski even said that Inge looks really good at the plate and that he's using all parts of the field. The sample size for that last comment had been 9 at bats! Two or three of those AB's were strikeouts. Several questions that spring to mind for me are: why is Ramon Santiago NEVER considered as a starting candidate? How many starts at 2nd base has he had thus far? And how many will he see? Now I actually have nothing against Inge and nothing particularly for Santiago, but dont we all just want to see the best possible option starting at 2nd base on most nights? Dombrowski's comments sound to me like a man trying to sell a product. 5 games and 9 at bats is just far too small of a sample size for profressional baseball men to be throwing around words like "phenomenal" and "using all parts of the field" (a reference i suspect more to BP than actual gametime performance). Let there be a fair and equal competition for a real starting 2nd base job!
