Clete Thomas designated for assignment; Drew Smyly called up

Stay connected for news and updates

The Detroit Tigers announced after the game OF Clete Thomas was designated for assignment. (He had to be, because he was out of options).

Thomas and Andy Dirks were battling throughout spring training. (At least we think they were. You never really know what is being said for real inside those meetings.) Thomas brought the better glove but the worse bat with him. I said earlier today I expected Thomas to come up short, as the Tigers had been using Dirks more during the first four games of the year. So it's come to pass.

Thomas appeared in three games, including Wednesday against the Rays. He had no at bats but scored a run on Tuesday.

If Thomas clears waivers, he'll be assigned to Triple-A Toledo.

Left-handed pitcher Drew Smyly will be called up to make his major league debut Thursday.

The Tigers still have to make two moves: Adam Wilk must be added to the roster for Saturday's start, and Brandon Inge will soon come off the disabled list.
