Years ago I when I lived in Seattle I was watching Mike Henneman try to save a game in the top of the ninth against the Ms in a televised game. The Tigers led 5-3. Mr. Henneman served up a 3-run homer to give the Ms a 6-5 lead. In the bottom of the ninth the Tigers walked off to win 7-6. The best vultured win I've ever seen
Last night Mr. Dotel came on to pitch the 6th inning. As I recall there was one out and runners on first and third. Mr. Dotel retired the batter but the gentleman on third scored and allowed the game to get tied. Eventually the Tigers won the game and Mr. Dotel was credited with win. He was also charged with a blown save. Now really! Perhaps Mr. Dotel could have enticed the hitter to hit into a DP but that's asking a lot. The situation was created by Mr. Smyly. Mr. Dotel did his job by getting the Tigers out of the inning. Had the bases been clear when Mr. Dotel came on to pitch, no one would have scored and Mr. Dotel would not have gotten the save because that's Mr. Valverde's job. Mr. Dotel's job was to get a lead to Mr. Valverde. Or actually in this case--get two outs and get out of the inning. Just a thought.
