ALCS Game 2; Red Sox 6, Tigers 5: Detroit meltdown

Max Scherzer no-hit the Red Sox for five innings and left after seven with the game well in hand. One bullpen meltdown, David Ortiz grand slam and a Jarrod Saltalamacchia single later, the Red Sox walked off 6-5 winners, tying the ALCS at 1-all.

Tigers bullpen hands Red Sox a gift and series tie

Max Scherzer was splendid but couldn't do it all. Unfortunately for Detroit, the bullpen couldn't do anything.

It seemed like we might be in for another 1-0 game. (Which is still preferable to, say, allowing runs.) But Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila both him home runs, sandwiching doubles by Prince Fielder (off the green monster) and Victor Martinez.

Here's Cabrera's home run, which was his second of the postseason and only the third since his injury in late August. He's gotten a hit each game, but only the Game 5 home run in the ALDS went for extra bases.

Alex Avila has struggled at the plate as bad as any regular in the Tigers' postseason lineup. Entering Sunday's game, he was batting .158 with no extra base hits.

But he made up for it with a two-run bomb to right field to put the Tigers up 5-0 through six innings.

Hunter catches long fly ball in the 5th

Max Scherzer and the Tigers continue to pitch well against the Red Sox, but it isn't without a scare or too. This ball off the bat of Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the fifth inning sounded and seemed like a home run. But it hung up long enough to stay in play. That didn't keep Torii Hunter from giving one last scare before making the catch.
