After a brief trip to the Big Apple, the Tigers return home to face Oakland's white shoe wearing pitching and defense bunch.
The A's continue to unearth guys you've never heard of and give former All Stars or bit part players a second chance to shine on the big stage. We all know the "Moneyball" stories, plot holes, etc etc, but the one thing that Oakland has continued to do year after year is develop quality starting pitching. From Zito to Mulder to Hudson to Haren to Gio Gonzalez, the current rotation features five guys that were all in diapers when the Berlin Wall came down that have a collective ERA of less than 4.
The most notable and dominant of the bunch is probably Jarrod Parker. The righty hasn't lost since before the All Star Break, and he can mix a hard fastball and a great change up. Factor in AJ Griffin leading the team in strikeouts and three other youngsters with WHIPs less than 1.3 and team control of at least 4 more years, and this the foundation for a great rotation of the future.
Factor in the presence of Bartolo Colon junkballing with the best of them; solid, rangy defense that plays well in the cavern of a ballpark they have out there; and timely hitting that will no doubt annoy Tigers' fans, and you have a pesky team that, if it gets the right matchups, has the potential to once again flame out in the ALCS.
On the beer front, the air should be getting colder soon, but now that the games start to mean a little more, it's already time to start drinking the hard(er) stuff. Arbor Brewing Company has just the treat for you: the Saced Cow IPA.
The hazy amber-orange color and bright head evoke the look of a grapefruit, and the Sacred Cow does not disappoint with the aroma either. A rich, bright citrus aroma greets the taster before a roasted malt flavor reaches the tongue. The citrusy floral notes maintain throughout the mouth, ticking the caramel, bread, and even a slight pine note before giving way to the crisp, aggressive hoppy finish. To best exemplify the true character of the beer, serve this slightly warmer than normal (closer to 50°F than below 40°F), and pair it with some pulled pork and potato salad while watching one of Pure Michigan's beautiful sunsets. At 6.8% ABV and 80 IBUs, it'll be a great end to a great game.
