"Beer of the Series" Series #48 - Kansas City Royals, September 13-15, Comerica Park

We have finally reached the last homestand of the season, and for most Tigers fans, it's setting up to be a great finish. After the Royals leave town, the final 13 games are all against teams below .500 including a series against arguably the second worst team in baseball this season. I guess what I'm trying to say is DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!

Kansas City comes in playing some of the hottest baseball in the American League. They are 2.5 games behind the Rays for the second wild card spot and only 7 games behind the Tigers in the AL Central. While they have to leapfrog the Indians to catch Detroit, they are in the position to do it. Between the young bats coming around; the stellar defense they play against the Tigers; and the rotation made up of Cy Chen, Cy Santana, and Cy Guthrie; be prepared to watch three EXCRUCIATING games where runs will be at a premium and someone from the bottom of the order is bound to win one game for either team. If there was ever a series for a beer, this is the one.

Kuhnhenn Brewing Company comes from just down the road with a selection of high gravity true to style beers focusing on true to style tradition. The store opened out of an old hardware store that transformed instead of closing and started selling brewing supplies out of the shop instead of just closing down. This series will focus on the Double Rice India Pale Ale, or DRIPA.

The DRIPA is an award winning IPA unique because it's brewed with rice instead of traditional malt. The difference in brewing means that there is an unusual crispness at the finish. The deep hop aroma evokes strong pine, citrus, and floral notes that linger throughout. The rice acts as a strange conveyor of flavor in that the normal roasted characteristics of malt are replaced with a steamy flavor that opens up the rest of the hoppiness and allows the cleaner finish at the end. A beautiful biscuit colored head adorns the pale straw color. At 9.5% ABV and just shy of 100 IBUs, this is an aggressive beer perfect for a great weekend of baseball and bonfires. Try it with some s'mores and hot dogs while bidding adieu to the last full weekend of summer.

Kuhnhenn Brewing Company is located in Warren, MI.
