I know he mentioned it in passing, and it may not amount to anything, but I like that Ausmus at least mentioned that it isn't a done deal that they'll carry 12 on the pitching staff. I wondered a lot last year if the 12th guy was really necessary or whether that last spot could have been better used. Now I know that with Smyly replacing Fister there is a bit more of a concern about innings monitoring, but the starting 5 is still obviously a big strength. Especially with the idea that although Lombardozzi COULD fill in at SS in a pinch he isn't ideal there, maybe they could get creative with a guy like H. Perez or Worth as an extra bench guy to be the designated back up there. I know Nathan, Rondon, Al-Al, and probably Joba are all 1 inning guys. I also know that more than likely Coke and Krol are loogys (although I hold out hope that Krol will be more than that). Maybe they would have to keep a guy that could go multiple innings (Putkonen? Reed? Miller?) at the expense of one of the other 6, but I still think it's not a bad idea. Also maybe I like the thought that Ausmus is at least willing to have conversations about some issues that are thought to be just understood on some clubs, no discussion necessary. Also it could be I'm just excited about baseball and I'm looking forward to talking about something other than the standard 5 or 10 issues that have already been talked a lot about. Does anyone else think they could get by with an 11 man staff?
