Jose Iglesias sidelined for 2014 season

Shortstop Jose Iglesias will miss 4-6 months, making him likely out for the remainder of the season.

The Detroit Tigers released an update regarding shortstop Jose Iglesias on Thursday. Dr. Thomas Clanton evaluated Iglesias in Colorado on Tuesday and reviewed the previous diagnostic studies (bone scan and MRI) which had shown bilateral tibial stress reactions.

Upon review, he recommended the recent CT scan, which indicated bilateral tibial stress fractures.

Iglesias will continue the same treatment regimen, but his activity will be limited to non-weight bearing conditioning such as biking, swimming and upper body strengthening for the next four to six months.

He will be reevaluated at the four-month mark.

This effectively puts Iglesias out of commission for most, if not the rest of the year. The Tigers have yet to say who will be replacing the sidelined shortstop for the season.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski stated recently that the Tigers would keep their options internal. He continued to stress internal options, saying the Tigers "haven't had any serious trade discussions."  Manager Brad Ausmus also said there's a possibility the team will carry two infielders to replace Iglesias, eliminating an extra outfielder.

But with the news that Iglesias is likely to miss more than 3/4 of the season, going with an internal replacement is likely to change.

When asked if it was likely Iglesias would return this season, Dombrowski's tone, as reported by the Detroit Free Press, was doubtful. He said Iglesias will be good to go for the 2015 season.

The Tigers have been shopping around for external options but nothing major had resulted from it. Prospective acquisitions have been numerous to include Stephen Drew, Chris Owings and Darwin Barney.
