Perhaps we as fans need to more vocal. Yell "fore" as loud as we can when the opposing team hits the ball, so that our defense can just clear the hell out of the way. It could only help, because there's really no way our defense could do any worse. Right now our defense is ranked last in the majors with a -23 DRS.
Now off to the WAR numbers for week four:
C: 0.1 WAR, 10th in AL.
The offense was there. The starting pitching was there for the most part. Obviously the defense, and the bullpen wasn't.
Misery loves company. Believe it or not, the Tigers pen wasn't the worst in the American League last week. Our putrid 7.20 ERA/4.88 FIP was trumped by the Astros 8.84 ERA/5.93 FIP, the Orioles 7.06 ERA/5.99 FIP, and the Blue Jays 6.08 ERA/5.15 FIP. So it was a pretty terrible week for quite a few teams. Even the great Red Sox bullpen looked like dog-meat (5.01 ERA/5.18 FIP). Craig Breslow, Edward Mujica, and Junichi Tarzawa were completely unreliable. It got so bad for Boston, that they had their 1B/OF Mike Carp throw an inning, where he walked 5 of the 7 batters he faced.
The only good news about our pen was that Joe Nathan had his best week as a Tiger, with a 0.00 ERA, 1.58 FIP, and 1.00 WHIP.
I doubt that any corrective measures are on the horizon for our defense, but there are a few spots in the bullpen that definitely can be improved. The only question is whether they look in house or explore outside the organization for answers.
