Sometimes we have it backwards. As for the Tigers holes in week 1, this just might be the case.
Going by WAR at Fangraphs, the Tigers only had one real hole in week 1. If it's the bullpen you say, then you'd be wrong. The Tigers pen actually had a 3.63 FIP in week one. To my amazement, Joba Chamberlain's FIP was actually 1.10, with his ERA being 18.00. Phil Coke's 81.00 ERA, was supported by a rather minuscule 12.10 FIP. The Tigers bullpen FIP ranked 6th best in the American League.
1st, let me define what a hole is. I'd say it's below replacement level or less than 0 WAR, and ranks among the worst of 15 teams in the AL.
This is how the Tigers ranked at each position the 1st week:
C: -0.1 WAR, 15th in AL.
1B: 0.4 WAR, 1st in AL.
2B: 0.1 WAR, 8th in AL.
SS: 0.1 WAR, 8th in AL.
3B: 0.4 WAR, 5th in AL.
RF: 0.2 WAR, 2nd in AL.
CF: 0.2 WAR, 7th in AL.
LF: 0.0 WAR, 10th in AL.
DH: 0.0 WAR, 8th in AL.
SP: 0.8 WAR, 3rd in AL.
RP: 0.0 WAR, 10th in AL.
So our only real hole during week 1, was at catcher, where we ranked as the very worst team in the AL with -0.1 WAR. Our bullpen and SS ranked 10th in the AL, which by my definition is not a hole. It's just a little below average and not a determent to the team. It's just treading water.
Thanks for reading. If get some rec's for this Fanpost, perhaps I'll do this every Monday, since I can sort WAR by the last 7 days at Fangraphs.
