Tigers' Interleague Lineup Possibilities

With five upcoming games this week against the Dodgers (Tuesday, Wednesday) and the Padres (Friday-Sunday), the Tigers will be the first American League team to travel to a National League park in the young 2014 season. Of course, Detroit won't have the luxury of a designated hitter in these games, creating some interesting decisions for Brad Ausmus in the near future. Anyway, here are some possible lineups I came up with:

Option 1: The Simplest Choice

2B: Ian Kinsler

RF: Tori Hunter

1B: Miguel Cabrera

CF: Austin Jackson

C: Alex Avila

3B: Nick Castellanos

SS: Alex Gonzalez

RF: Rajai Davis

P: Scherzer/Sanchez/Porcello/Verlander/Scherzer

This lineup simply takes Victor Martinez out of the order and pushes every other hitter up a spot. This would be the most solid defensive option for Ausmus, keeping everybody at their natural positions. This lineup doesn't look tremendous offensively, but is the most realistic option for the Tigers.

Option 2: Victor's Back Behind The Plate

2B: Ian Kinsler

RF: Tori Hunter

1B: Miguel Cabrera

C: Victor Martinez

CF: Austin Jackson

3B: Nick Castellanos

SS: Alex Gonzalez

RF: Rajai Davis

P: Scherzer/Sanchez/Porcello/Verlander/Scherzer

Through the first week of the season, Alex Avila hasn't been impressive enough to be considered a vital piece in the Tigers' offense. Meanwhile, Martinez's bat will be needed to protect Cabrera, especially in the two game series against the Dodgers. Ausmus even stated that Victor will catch at least one game this week: "We just can't have Victor's bat on the bench for that long of a time."

Option 3: Best Offensive Choice, Worst Defensive

2B: Ian Kinsler

RF: Tori Hunter

3B: Miguel Cabrera

1B: Victor Martinez

CF: Austin Jackson

C: Alex Avila

LF: Nick Castellanos

SS: Alex Gonzalez

P: Scherzer/Sanchez/Porcello/Verlander/Scherzer

This is by far the most interesting of the lineup possibilities that I've drawn up thus far. As you can see, we have multiple players switching into places that they've had experience in, but aren't their natural positions. Cabrera would move to third where he played the past two seasons, Castellanos would play left (the position that the Tigers were trying to make him play when we still had Prince), and Victor Martinez would play first, his non-DH position. Of course, with players moving positions, the defense becomes more vulnerable at large, but the Tigers might desire to keep both Miggy and Victor in the batting order while eliminating the presence of Collins or Davis, two of Detroit's weakest hitters with Castellanos in left.

Overall, I certainly hope that our first trip away from Comerica Park goes well. I'm hoping for a split against the Dodgers and for the Tigers to win two out of three against San Diego. Or a sweep of both teams would be nice. Whatever the Tigers fell like.
