DETROIT — Wednesday morning the Tigers announced their selections for Pitcher and Player of the Month.
J.D. Martinez, who earned the American League Player of the Week for the first time in his major league career, was given the honor of Tigers Player of the Month.
Martinez hit .345 for the month of June, knocking in seven home runs and 21 RBI, while hitting nine doubles and scoring 12 additional runs.
In that time Martinez played every outfield position batting fifth until Victor Martinez was taken out of the lineup for a couple of days. In Victor Martinez's absence, J.D. Martinez filled in the cleanup spot for the last day of the month and spent July 1 in the same position.
Anibal Sanchez was one of four pitchers in the American League with a minimum of three starts to finish the month without a loss. For his efforts, the Tigers selected Sanchez as their Pitcher of the Month.
Sanchez finished June with a 3-0 record and three no decisions. In 38 2/3 innings he maintained a 2.79 ERA while striking out 25 and holding opponents to a .211 batting average.
