Beer of the Series 2.34 - Chicago White Sox

David Banks

This has been the longest and hardest 10 days of my life.

Last week, my wife and I, along with her father, had to watch her mother die of an awful bacterial infection. This was not only her mom, but her best friend. Needless to say, beer was not quite as important last week as other things. I hope that you understand. I'll probably not be writing retroactive posts like I have in the past, but if someone wants to fill in and write those two (and I have a good beer in mind for the AZ series), that'd be fun.

I saw over the last week that we brought a copy of the rule book but no bats to Anaheim. You can pitch as well as you'd like but if you don't score a few runs, it kinda sorta doesn't really matter at all. A good series against the White Sox will go a long way to reassure our rightful place as a force in the division, but a poor one could also make it a race going into August. I don't like tight division races anymore...

As the dog days assert themselves in the Upper Midwest, IPAs are the flavor of the month. Michigan is home to one of the best IPAs in the country. While several breweries put out great fare, the Bell's Two Hearted Ale is still one of the top stylistic examples you will find.

The Two Hearted Ale is so named for the Two Hearted River in the Upper Peninsula, home of some great fishing and an old Coast Guard station for Lake Superior. The beer, however, tastes much better than fish or lake water. Pacific Northwest hops are added both at the boil and in the fermenter to create a strong hope aroma with citrus flavors and a crisp hoppy bite. While the hops are the star of the show, the heavy malt body gives a beautiful copper color and a solid body that doesn't distract from the hops themselves. A truly fantastic beer whose 7% ABV and 55 IBU figures let it pair well with anything grilled, and a couple six packs will set you up for the series.

Bell's Brewery is located in Kalamazoo, MI.
