Beer of the Series 2.43 - New York Yankees

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

As I pointed out in the last post, with the season winding down, the Tigers have only two non-division series remaining on the schedule. While every game is important, winning games within your division (a collection of series that comprise nearly half your schedule) are paramount to making the playoffs. This was on display over the weekend as the Tigers picked up a series split in Minnesota by coming back nicely Saturday night and Sunday after being blown off the field Friday and Saturday afternoon by the cream stuffed dessert pastries.

The last time the Tigers faced the Yankees, they pitched very well but did nothing whatsoever to support their starters, stumbling to a 1-3 trip to the Bronx. Last night, things seemed to get off to a better start accentuated by Rick Porcello profanely commenting on the athletic prowess of his outfield. With another doubleheader in the cards this weekend, a deep start by the starters will go a long way to assuring the bullpen is in good shape for the twin bill.

I have already written twice about Bells this season, but a recent announcement by the brewery bears mention (especially with Derek Jeter, a Kalamazoo native, making his last trip to the Motor City). Starting this month, they will be releasing beers, seven total, called the Planets Series, based on the suite by Gustav Holst. Mars is the first beer in the series, followed by Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune (Holst didn't write about Earth, and Pluto wasn't yet misclassified as a planet when he wrote the suite). I have begun my search for this around Cleveland, but I would appreciate any first hand knowledge in the comments.

Mt. Pleasant Brewing Company spawned out of a steakhouse taproom that created flavorful, hearty beers that paired nicely with a medium rare ribeye. Today's offering is their tasty Hobo's Breath Brown Ale.

When done well, a brown ale is smoky, nutty, and slightly sweet with just the right kick. It's no wonder that the Hobo's Breath Brown is used in a barbecue sauce and pairs so well with roasted & smoked meats as well as grilled chicken. Smooth and malt-forward relying on pale and caramel barley to create the foundation, the Hobo's Breath has a distinct but not overbearing hop bite at the end, cleaning up nicely to prepare the mouth for another tasty sip. At 6% ABV and 22 IBUs, this is a tasty beer for a cool summer night.

Mt. Pleasant Brewing Company is located in - surprise! - Mt. Pleasant, MI.
