It was another brutal game in Kansas City but Jose Iglesias took the brunt of it. The Detroit Tigers shortstop was taken out of the game in the top of the third inning when he suffered an injury on a foul ball that drilled the fingers of his right hand. Andrew Romine replaced him in the batter's box facing an 0-2 count and struck out to end the frame.
The Tigers announced Iglesias suffered a contusion on the middle finger of that hand. X-Rays made in the clubhouse were negative. He will be re-evaluated when the Tigers return to Detroit Friday.
Iglesias had squared to bunt with a runner on first base after the Tigers had tied the game 6-6 in the third. His right hand was near the middle of the bat and the middle fingers were wrapped around the front. A 95 mph sinker from Royals starter Edinson Volquez hit the fingers square.
Iglesias immediately dropped the bat and doubled over in pain, dropping to the ground. Head athletic trainer Kevin Rand and Tigers manager Brad Ausmus immediately came on the field, and Ausmus soon called for Romine to pinch hit for Iglesias.
Unable to stand on his own because of the pain, Iglesias had to be helped off the field by Rand. This post will be updated as warranted.
