Beer of the Series 4.14: Minnesota Twins

I'm typing this as the Tigers are currently putting a seven-spot on the Twins in the inning and while drinking an Oberon, so this could get interesting. However, I think it's easier to feel better given the fact that the Tigers have a nice run of what should be considered winnable games on the horizon.

Unfortunately, I've seen many a Tigers season derailed by a run like this, so you have to hope that the growth that we've seen over the past weeks, despite the record, leads to some success in the next couple weeks. I'm hoping they get to the north side of .500 before that Royals series. If not, I'm going to be at the bottom of the bottle of...something.

It's been a while since I've talked about Founders Brewing Company, but my trip to Grand Rapids was my first time visiting the brewery. We all know of the list of beers you can find all over Michigan and the Midwest, but every now and then, you need to make the hajj to try something in person. This piece will talk about the Barrel-Aged Grand Rapids Stout.

When your beer comes in barely an inch of a brandy snifter, you know it's going to be good. This definitely fit the bill. A smooth, deep chocolate color was the harbinger of a bold, flavorful stout. With notes of chocolate, oats, and molasses, the Grand Rapids Stout has many of the characteristics of a true stout, including a sharp, hoppy bite at the end. The notes of bourbon pop up throughout, including a subtle woody tinge and a mellowing characteristic to lead up to the finish. Since this is a pub exclusive, I don't have the stats for it like I normally post, but what I want to encourage you to do with this piece is check out the tap room and find something you can't normally find in your local beer store. Use it as an opportunity to learn a little and broaden your horizons. However, if I had to hazard a guess, I'm thinking this was about 8.2% ABV and 45 IBUs. It was 100% tasty though.

Founders Brewing Company is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
