Beer of the Series 4.43: Chicago White Sox

As far as my personal fandom goes, there are two sports I get extremely amped up for as their seasons begin. One is obviously baseball. The typical pastoral minutiae that gets bandied about is all well and good, but I'm really just a big fan of seeing Justin Verlander in my life every fifth day and watching everything from guys hitting baseballs incredible distances to the random happenstance of a seventh starter turning into Sandy Koufax for one day (and always hoping that that guy has an Old English D on his chest while he does it).

The other sport? College football. While I love waking up for the first Premier League weekend, catching the first NFL games on a Sunday, or watching the Pacers and Red Wings get things started on a random weeknight, the commencement college football is such a welcome distraction to my life. The lack of a preseason, the random start times, the upsets, and the passion of the absolutely belligerently drunk crowds fill me with incredible joy. Hell, I'm a Purdue fan, and I'm absolutely jacked the season starts Saturday. Now, that feeling may only last a week or two, but it's an awesome feeling nonetheless, and something I'll absolutely drink to.

After looking through all the beers that I've written about this season, I was astonished to see that I have not written about a single Bell's beer. This is something I'm going to immediately fix. Here's the Oatsmobile Ale.

The first time I had this was earlier this year. I was not a big fan for the first few sips, but it quickly grew on me to one that I enjoyed sipping by the end. Part of this could have been temperature (beers like this tend to taste better around 45-50 degrees instead of the 35-40 degrees most draft lines pour out at. The Oatsmobile is a unique beer: a session pale ale with oat flakes calling to mind the erstwhile GM brand. It features a mix of citrus and tropical fruit aromas and a body that shares more in common with most stouts than pale ales, but the flavor is unmistakably hop forward. The clean finish makes it a nice easy drinking beer on a hot day, and a only 4.3% ABV and 35 IBUs, you'll take great pleasure sipping on these as the sun goes down.

Bell's Brewery is located in Comstock, Michigan.
