Anibal Sanchez re-signs with Tigers, report says

Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

About 16 hours after Anibal Sanchez was said to be signing with the Cubs, he appears to be headed back to Detroit for five years

Anibal Sanchez has decided to stay with the Tigers, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports this morning on Twitter.

Of course, around 6 p.m. Thursday Nightengale reported on Twitter that Sanchez was a Cub. So, well, Twitter reporting.

The deal is said to be worth $80 million across five years. It gives the Tigers a strong top-four in the rotation, with left-hander Drew Smyly and right-hander Rick Porcello waiting in the wings. Porcello might end up traded. We'll explore that possibility later.

Sanchez had a 4-6 record and 3.74 ERA with the Tigers after arriving in July following a deal with the Marlins. Until the middle of August, it appeared to be one of the worst trades of GM Dave Dombrowski's Tigers career. A fix in Sanchez's mechanics seemed to do the trick, however, because he had a 2.15 ERA in his final eight regular-season games of the season. He went 1-2 with a 1.77 ERA in the postseason for Detroit.

We will, of course, be hitting this story from several angles throughout the day.

So long as it's true, anyway.
