In a very bizarre turn of events the tigers informed me I was traded to Baltimore and today told me that wasnt happening and I was realeased— Cale Iorg (@EuSouCI) March 29, 2013
It is of course somewhat arbitrary to just look at Opening Day rosters. You could just as easily look at the roster after game 107. Still, it is fun to watch the evolution of a team over time and while Opening Day Rosters are easy to get, game 107 rosters would take some effort. Here are the last 3 Tigers’ Opening Day rosters. The colors in 2013 show how many seasons in a row the player has been on Detroit’s Opening Day roster. Green shading indicates 3 or more years.Yellow shading indicates 2 years. Orange shading indicates that this is the first year. The colors in 2011 and 2012 just match 2013, they do not refer to prior years. I added Smyly at the end in 2012 since he was named the 5th starter, but was not on the Opening Day roster because off days allowed the Tigers to use 4 starters for a couple trips through the rotation. Here are the 2009 and 2010 rosters if you want to go further back. Here is a link to a larger version of the chart above.
I fun little article that should make all the Saber folks happy they aren't Phillies fans. My favorite part is this little gem from Ruben Amaro Jr., "I don't care about walks," Amaro said in January. "I care about production. To be frank with you, I've said this all along. All of the sabermatricians and all of the people who think they know exactly what makes a good club . . . to me, it's more about run production and being able to score runs and drive in runs."
...and the masses cheered. All kidding aside, I wish him the best in his upcoming retirement.
Woo Bruce Chen won't be starting for the Royals! This move alone pretty much guarantees the Tigers two more wins this season.
Justin Verlander was recently mentioned at Outsports (which recently became part of SB Nation) after his comment that the goal of the Detroit Tigers is to win a championship and that sexual orientation of players doesn't affect that ultimate goal. Kudos to him for representing the Tigers so well, both in this instance and many others.
8. Giancarlo Stanton, RF, Marlins — One AL executive makes a good point: never rule out the Tigers as a major player for Stanton when the time comes. Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski has strong ties to the Marlins from his time with them. He also appears to have the chips in third baseman/outfielder Nick Castellanos, outfielder Avisail Garcia, righty Rick Porcello, and others.
Since the MLB seems to have slackened their hold on allowing lowlifes like us to embed videos on our sideshow blogs, we'll start bringing you as many Spring Training highlights as possible. Here, Avisail Garcia gives us a nice preview of what Miguel Cabrera will be doing for Team Venezuela during the World Baseball Classic.
We do not know what to make of this.
I took some information from various pages on the official Tigers site and made a 5-page PDF which has the 40-man roster, the non-roster invitees, and little blurbs on the top 20 prospects. Hope you find it handy.
