Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

1-1

Off to St. Louis they go, tied up 1-1.  Todd Jones made it interesting, but in the end Kenny Rogers dominating performance was once again the story (questionable substance, not standing).

I'm afraid that only negative things can come out of that "mysterious substance" on Kenny's hand in the first inning. My question is if it was definitely an illegal substance, why wouldn't the umps have taken action right there? Maybe I missed something. Either way, I'm not liking the fact that this is going to be brought up on a night when, "post-substance", Rogers was pretty dominant.

It's in the record books as a win, and that makes me happy. On to St. Louis. This is going to be a great series.

That win was vital,
Now we have to take one or two in St. Louis.  That is going to be very tough.  The new Busch will be rocking for sure.

Nate and Bonderman have my full confidence in them, although their matchups aren't too favorable...at least not as favorable as game 1, and we saw what happened there.

So NERVOUS
in that ninth inning...thank God Jones didn't blow it.  Kenny would have killed him.

The Tigers
Have beaten some good pitchers this offseason.  Although Suppan and Carpenter are going to be very tough.

Looking back...
it seems that the stuff on Rogers hand did in fact look like tar.  Why wouldn't the umps have tossed him?  I hope to God it wasn't.

Kenny said it was dirt and rosin.

how much was it discussed?
If the person next to me at the game hadn't gotten a phone call from someone watching on TV, I wouldn't have known at all.

Christy Matthewson, et. al.
Something has been bothering me since last night.

Given Rogers' amazing post-season string of 23 consecutive scoreless innings, the sportswriters keep mentioning Christy Matthewson as the record-holder at 27 innings.

But isn't this wrong?

Babe Ruth pitched for the Red Sox and beat Matthewson's record, pitching 29-2/3 consecutive scoreless innings in the 1918 World Series -- a feat so enormously memorable that the Sox showed their appreciation by selling him to the New York Yankees. But that's another story.

Ruth's record held for over 40 years until another Yankee, Whitey Ford, beat it in 1961 when he ran his string to 32 consecutive scorelss innings.

Rogers's effort this year is awesome; Matthewson's is legendary. But let's not forget Ruth and Ford.

Records
The record that Kenny is close to most scoreless innings in ONE postseason..that is held by Christy.

The Babe HAD the record for most consecutive scorless innings period at 29 2/3; however, White Ford broke it has it now at 31+ innings.

Incidentally, Kenny has a streak of

23 1/3 innings going
of shutout baseball....so he needs only an 8 or so inning shutout his next game and it is his.

Guys...
You all bring up good points.

Perhaps Kenny was cheating the rest of the game.  Maybe Reyes was cheating in game 1?  According to what ESPN was saying last night, 60 to 70% of pitchers do it.  Obviously I'm not trying to condone it, and if he was doing it shame on the MLB to not take any action.

All I'm saying is that we know he cleaned his hand off.  The substance wasn't there anymore.  He pitched great.  I guess we just have to move on.

It's going to be a great series...let's enjoy the rest of it.  Kenny will be on a short leash if he pitches again...at least I hope.  I don't want there to be any controversy over the WS, especially when the two teams are battling like they are.
