I figured I'd throw out some recent news coming from the Tigers (and the rest of the MLB) over the last couple of days. Staying awake during these extremely slow days of the offseason is always a problem, but there has been some stuff to discuss lately.
...Former Tigers utility OF Alexis Gomez has signed a one-year deal to play for the Colorado Rockies, pending a physical:
Purple Row, the SB Nation's Colorado Rockies Blog, is not a huge fan of this move:
The Denver Post stated that Rockies pinch hitters only batted .214 last season, so perhaps Alexis can help the team improve in that aspect, and maybe be an efficient defensive replacement as well.
...Since we are on the subject of Alexis Gomez, news coming from the Free Press today is that the Tigers have signed a couple of players to minor-league contracts - OF Timo Perez and RP Bobby Seay.
While neither of these players jump out at you as impressive, both are suitable for minor-league contracts. With OFs like Clevlen (and maybe Maybin?) in the organization, I don't believe we will Perez see too much action on the big league roster this season - even though the fact that he has some PAs in the majors could be a positive. Same with Seay, although he's a left-handed reliever with major league experience.
...Cameron Maybin is being invited to Lakeland for the Tigers 2007 Spring Training:
I can't wait to hear reports on how he is doing - and I hope that this is a process that speeds along his track to being a productive player at the major league level.
That's all for now. Have a happy Friday!
