Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

The Miguel Cabrera Hokey-Pokey

UPDATE #2 (6:30 p.m.):  Okay, it looks like this thing is really going to happen.  Peter Gammons and Buster Olney were on SportsCenter just now, saying the deal could be completed tonight.  And MLB.com says the trade is "all but finalized," with six players going to Florida, including Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller.  I believe Gammons said Mike Rabelo would be included, as well.

The next question, I suppose, is where this leaves Brandon Inge?  Does he become a much higher paid version of Omar Infante or Ryan Raburn?  Or will he be traded to another team that could use a slick glove at third base?

(Thanks to Mike McClary and friend of the Daily Fungo, Peter Fuhrmeister, for being quick with the breaking news.)

UPDATE (5:00 p.m.):  I forgot to include Danny Knobler's contention (from sources in Detroit's organization) that the Marlins might be playing the Tigers against the Angels to yield a better offer from the Halos.

Peter Gammons expects a deal to be made with the Angels for four players, including Howie Kendrick and Jeff Mathis.  (Jayson Stark, however, has conflicting information.)

- - - - - - - - - - -

After earlier disputing the rumors that Miguel Cabrera would be involved in any trade between the Detroit Tigers and Florida Marlins, the Detroit News' Lynn Henning now acknowledges that there were "conflicting reports" and says Cabrera is indeed being pursued by the Tigers.

[...] sources with knowledge of the two clubs' conversations say Detroit indeed has inquired about Cabrera, 24, who last season batted .320 with 31 home runs and 119 RBIs.  The Tigers likewise have made ongoing inquiries about Willis, 25, who was 10-15 in 2007.

The story I originally linked to has now been changed on detnews.com.  I can't keep up with this stuff.  I now have to step away from the computer, which means a trade will surely go down.

holy shit!
i am going to need some time to digest this,....... what to do with inge, my girlfriend just named her puppy Maybin (in august, at my urging), miller gone, rabelo...... ugh i just don't know how to feel....

Ah
Finally, this Yankee fan gets a nice break from the Santana coverage.  You guys want to talk about nervous wrecks?  I've got posters on my board ready to concede the decade to the Sox if they add Santana.

But onto my point:
Why can't Cabrera play LF?

I mean, unless you're really attached to Jacque Jones...

It'd be worse for you D, but you could always move Inge and play Cabrera at 3B.

Or think about Sheffield in left with Miguel DHing?

Won't believe it til I see it!!
Trying not to get too excited because we all know how some of these deals go right up to the last minute and then collapse.  OMG, this is just unbelievable.

All pitchers
Badenhop, DLC and Trahern. Maybe not a major leaguer in the bunch. What a deal for the Tigers.

Wow...
Losing FuneralOnAShip would be the hardest one, for me, I think... :)

But really, holy crap! It looks like the Tigers mean business. And this isn't really one of those situations where you say that we're mortgaging the future- these are still young guys.

I'm not entirely sold on Willis, though I like the guy. I just hope last year was a blip, not a sign of things to come.

Wow
Assuming they extend Cabrera (and I can't imagine DD would make this trade if he was not confident he could lock him up long term), then it is a great trade for the Tigers.  Unbelievable is right.

Re: Cabrera
I agree.  Even though the Tigers have him for at least two years, I'd have to think signing him to a long-term deal was part of the discussions.

Obviously Cabrera is the centerpiece
of this deal, but how long do the Tigers have Willis under contract for and how much are these guys making?

I know I could figure this stuff out somewhere else, but if you can't be lazy when posting on a blog, where can you be lazy?
