I Think He'll Be Out For More Than One Start, Jim
Daily Fungo reader and Detroit Tigers Podcast listener Peter Fuhrmeister just informed me via instant message that he heard on the Tigers' radio broadcast that pitcher Kenny Rogers had surgery this morning to remove a blood clot from his shoulder, and the recovery will keep him out for six to eight weeks.
(Here's more on blood clots from The Detroit Tigers Weblog and, of course, the go-to injury guy, Baseball Prospectus' Will Carroll.)
Mack Avenue Tigers is corroborating the story, via ESPN. I can't keep up with these kids in the Tigers blogosphere, man.
And in other DL news, back-up catcher Vance Wilson is also headed for a 15-day break to heal up his sore right elbow. Mike Rabelo has been called up from AAA Toledo to take his place.
Oh, Brian and Sam look more clairvoyant by the day...
UPDATE: Rogers will need 6-8 weeks' recovery before he can even begin throwing. Not only was a clot removed, but an artery was replaced, as well. Including rehab (and, of course, everything else involved with the recovery going well) it will be three months before he can return to the mound for the Tigers.
UPDATE #2: According to the Free Press' John Lowe, if Chad Durbin struggles with replacing Rogers in the rotation, Dave Dombrowski says the team could call up rookie Andrew Miller.
