Tigers Acquire José Capellán

The Tigers made yet another move for the bullpen today, acquiring RHP José Capellán from the Brewers. In exchange the Tigers sent Single-A pitcher Chris Cody to Milwaukee.

The 26-year-old Capellan has spent the past month in the Milwaukee bullpen after being promoted from the rotation at Triple-A Nashville. He's 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in seven games for the Brewers, scattering 10 hits over 12 innings with six walks and eight strikeouts.

Capellan was a key piece of the Brewers' relief corps in 2006, making 61 appearances and posting a 4-2 record with a 4.40 ERA. However, he was optioned out to Nashville at the end of Spring Training and requested a trade soon after. He was placed on the restricted list later in April after leaving the team for two days, but has had a clean record since.

Cody is in his second year with the organization, having been an eighth round pick in last year's draft. This season he has split time between West Michigan and Lakeland, and has looked pretty good despite a 5.6 overall record; In 15 starts he has a 1.89 ERA and has struck out 95 batters to only walking 16.

Capellán is only three years older than Cody, and has already seen a good amount of time coming out of a Major League bullpen.  With that in mind, this may not be a bad move for the Tigers, who should try anything in their power to use Jason Grilli less.

UPDATE - 1:30 pm:

Danny Knobler has chimed in on the deal. He seems to like it.

Brew Crew Ball has a running discussion on the trade.

DLC down to Toledo
One other note on this deal: Eulogio De La Cruz was sent down to Triple-A Toledo to make room on the roster for Capellan.  He was pretty brutal in two of his last three appearances.
