The Quest For Relief: Return of the Farns?

Here's a rumor that I'm surprised hasn't come up before (though jscape2000 brought up this name in the diaries last month).  From today's New York Post:

In what only can be described as a strange twist, the Tigers have an interest in taking Kyle Farnsworth off the Yankees' hands.

According to multiple sources, the Tigers are looking to make a deal that would bring Farnsworth back to the team he pitched 46 games for in 2005.  Ideally, the Tigers would like to add Texas closer Eric Gagne but he likely will balk at a deal that sends him to a team where he can't close.

Tigers scout Dick Egan was at last night's Yankees' 7-1 win over the Royals in which Farnsworth didn't pitch in.  What the Yankees would get back depends on how much money the Tigers want to pay on Farnsworth's salary.

Farnsworth, who is making $5.25 million this year and $5.5 million next season, is 1-1 with a 4.24 ERA.

I'm guessing that Samela is giggly about this.  And actually, so am I.  Or maybe I just wanted an excuse to post this video.  You know, it's been just about two years to the day since Farnsworth piledrove Jeremy Affeldt into the Comerica Park turf.  (It's at the 2:50 mark, if you're short on time.)

You knew when Big Boy got there, it was gonna get on!  You're welcome.

Seriously, though - Farnsworth hasn't been great this year (which is presumably why he's available).  Looking at his stats, the most troubling number is 26 strikeouts in 40 1/3 innings. That's not really bringing the heat that Detroit's bullpen needs.  Other red flags are the 45 hits and 20 walks that he's given up, and a .280 BAA.  I think the only notable thing he's done this year is criticize the "family clause" in Roger Clemens' contract.

Just last week, Joe Torre said he was considering taking Farnsworth out of his set-up role, adding that he doesn't like using The Farns on consecutive days.  The article also points out that Farnsworth has only pitched four 1-2-3 innings all season, one for each month.  After Ron Guidry told him that he was throwing far fewer sliders than in previous seasons, however, Farnsworth has made an effort to throw the pitch more often and thinks that could be a reason for his struggles.

So what do you think?  Is Farnsworth worth taking a shot on for the right price?  Or should the Tigers pass and look elsewhere?

EDIT:  I should try to put up a video that works, eh?  Sorry about that.  I was working from an old blog posting, and wasn't aware it had been taken down.  I can only assume the Affeldt family is responsible.  Maybe I can round up some buddies to re-enact the brawl in my backyard this weekend, and we can post the video on YouTube.

Professor Farnsworth?
I wake up this morning, and see that the loopy Farns is the hot rumor? I was at first, WTF? Now, I'm warming up to it, mostly due to the fact that it sounds like it's just going to mean taking on his contract, and not much in the way of a prospect.

If the cost of a Lidge, Cordero, one of the Texas relievers, or any of the usual suspects is unreasonable, Frans is not a bad fall back. I'd hope the Tigers would do more, though...

K's
He may not be a huge upgrade, but at this point no one in the bullpen can really get a strikeout when the team needs one. His K's may be down, but I assume the stuff is still there, maybe he just can't handle that famous New York pressure.

First things first
George King wrote that article, and Yankee fans know that he makes shit up all the time, so we over at PinstripeAlley aren't getting too worked up over it. (My favorite George King was Melky Cabrera for Miggy Cabrera).
A month ago we would have tried to get something back for him, but at this point Farnsy is just in the way of better arms (Edwar Ramirez, Chris Britton, Joba Chamberlain).
We'll have a log jam of MLB players once Giambi gets off the DL in the next week or so; if I'm the Yankees I'd be looking at the bats you have in the minors.  I'd take Ron Bourquin (3B Low A) if the Tigers would take most of Farnsworth's contract.  If you want us to pay for Farnsy to pitch for you next season, then I'd start asking about Gorkys Hernandez or Jeff Larish.
I suspect Cash is going to ask for far less than what it would cost to bring in even Danny Qualls.

Depends on the price...
...if it's Jason Grilli or Neifi Perez, yes. But I wouldn't give up much for Farnsworth at this point, especially considering what he's being paid.

I honestly don't know
whether to laugh or scream in horror at the thought of this.  On the one hand, The Farns!!!  On the other hand, he has made Yankee fans want to rip their eyeballs out this season.

On the other OTHER hand, Joe Torre seems to have serious issues handling his relievers this season.  So there may be something in that, and perhaps some of those guys could rebound a little if they got out of that town (and that's assuming their arms hadn't already been ruined; i.e. nobody should touch Scott Proctor no matter how much he's dangled).

I think the Yanks would LIKE to move The Farns, but are gonna have a real hard time finding someone to take on his contract.  That may be why the Tigers came up at all; they're one of the few teams who I guess might be able to do so.

Re: Bourquin
That sounds about right, if we're talking about the Tigers taking on Farnsworth's contract.  I'd hate to see the Tigers give up an infield prospect, though - even if he hasn't been playing very well this year and is in low A ball.
