Sean Casey Could End Up in Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are currently accepting applications for major league left-handed hitters.  They're interested in outfielder Brad Wilkerson, but according to the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo, he might find a better contract elsewhere.  Who else could be on Theo Epstein's shopping list?  Our old friend, Sean Casey.

Casey, 33, is an intriguing possibility.  He's lost his first base job to Carlos Guillen in Detroit.  He's limited defensively, but he hit .296 last season with four homers and 54 RBIs.  He also hit .455 as a pinch hitter (5 for 11) with three RBIs.  He had a .353 on-base percentage and has a .366 OBP over his 11-year career.  Casey loves Boston and at this stage of his career has indicated his main objective is to play for a team that can win the World Series.  He would accept a limited role.

Interesting how a team interested in Casey can spin the stats, eh?  In Detroit, "He's limited defensively, but he hit .296 last season with four homers and 54 RBIs" would carry an entirely different tone with it.

A bench role would be ideal for Casey, as he's not capable of providing the pop expected from a starting first baseman.  He could've helped the Tigers in a similar fashion if there was a spot on the roster for him.
