New manager Jim Leyland is hiring his coaches, and they've all got something in common. To wit:

Gene Lamont, bench coach: Pirates manager, 1997-2000. A Tiger catcher in his playing days.

Lloyd McClendon, bullpen coach: Pirates manager, 2001-2004. Pirates 1B/OF, 1990-1994.

And Van Slyke, likely outfield coach: Pirates centerfielder, 1987-1994. Three All-Star games, five Gold Gloves.

Don Slaught, hitting coach: Pirates catcher, 1990-1995.

Rafael Belliard, infield coach: Pirates shortstop, 1982-1990.

All that's missing is a pitching coach, a slot that Larry Rothschild is likely to fill. What's his connection to the Pirates? None, so perhaps Bob Walk just isn't available. Rothschild was, though, Leyland's pitching coach with the Marlins.
