Joe Mays (5-4, 4.03) takes the hill against crafty southpaw Mike Maroth (7-10, 4.20) in the second game of a five-game series.
Mays' ERA is too good for a pitcher with 24 BBs and 39 Ks in 105 IPs. In fact, his K/9 has declined every year that he's been in the bigs; even his stellar 2001 didn't interrupt that trend. Despite a generally mediocre career, Mays is definitely in the Ernie Whitt category of players who dominate the Tigers. From '02-'04, he was 3-0, 3.86 against Detroit, his second-best numbers against anyone, though we've knocked him around early this season.
