Gil Meche (10-7, 4.70) is likely to start for the Mariners tonight at Comerica Park. If his shoulder prevents him from pitching, Jamie Moyer will probably step in. Mike Maroth takes the hill for Detroit (8-11, 4.57).
The Mariners' 'pen must be looking mighty short. Last night's rookie starter lasted one inning, forcing another rookie I'd never heard of to pitch five innings -- and pitch Jeff Harris did, holding the Tigers without a run over five in his ML debut. The Mariners are stretched even thinner by Moyer's general elderliness and Ryan Franklin's suspension for steroid use. Onetime Tiger flop Masao Kida, now a spry 36, is up with the 'ners in the wake of the Franklin mess -- don't be surprised to see him pitch tonight.
The Tigers have now lost five in a row, and refuse to get better even against an inferior last-place team. At least new Tiger Roman Colon pitched a scoreless frame last night. Anyone have a report on how he looked?
