The Pitching Matchups

New, comments

We already know the game 1 matchup will the A's Barry Zito taking on Nate Robertson in a battle of leftys. Assuming that the rotations stay the same, I'm pretty sure this is how it will look:

Zito vs Robertson - Game 1
Loaiza vs Verlander - Game 2
Haren vs Rogers - Game 3
Harden vs Bonderman - Game 4

Zito made only one appearance against the Tigers this year, a 4-3 Detroit win on April 20th. This was the game in which Curtis Granderson was walked in to provide the winning run in a 3 run ninth inning rally. Zito's numbers from that game: 7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K. Zito is 16-10 with a 3.83 ERA on the season. He has pretty similar numbers against rightys and leftys, with right handed batters hitting .257 and left handed batters hitting .260 on the season.

One thing to keep an eye on is whether or not Leyland goes with the same lineup he threw out there against Randy Johnson in the ALDS. Here is what that lineup looks like career-wise against Zito:

  • Polanco - 11 AB, .636/.692/.636
  • Monroe - 21 AB, .095/.231/.238, 7 K
  • Thames - 3 AB, 0 H, 1 K
  • Ordonez - 23 AB, .130/.286/.174
  • Guillen - 30 AB, .200/.273/.400
  • Pudge - 26 AB, .308/.357/.500, 9 K
  • Casey - 5 AB, 3 H, 1 HR
  • Inge - 24 AB, .125/.192/.125
  • Grandy - 2 AB, 1 H
