Former Tiger Chris Gomez got a first hand glimpse of how hard a Joel Zumaya fastball is thrown last night, breaking his hand on a HBP:
When Zumaya hit Baltimore's Chris Gomez, an ex-Tiger, flush on the left hand with a 97-mph pitch on Wednesday night, there was little doubt in Leyland's mind what had happened.
Even though Gomez stayed in the game, he was pinch-hit for in the ninth because he couldn't grip the bat. The Orioles placed him on the 60-day disabled list on Thursday with a broken left hand.
"There was no doubt [Gomez] broke it," Leyland said. "You could hear it."
