Tigers Start Off Cardinals Series with Win

The Tigers started off the Cardinals series with a bang tonight, winning 10-6 against the Red Birds and improving their record to 49-25 overall and 8-2 against their NL Central interleague opponents.

A couple notes from tonight's game:

  • Tigers catcher Pudge Rodriguez left the game when he was hit with a foul tip on the wrist. Thankfully for the Tigers the X-rays were negative and Pudge is listed day-to-day. Vance Wilson replaced Pudge in the fifth inning.
  • Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols returned yesterday, and was appearing in his second game back tonight. It looks like he didn't miss a beat. 4-4 with a 2B, 1B, and a homer off of Tigers pitcher Todd Jones in the ninth. It was Pujols' 26th of the year. Pujols is now 4-6 lifetime against Todd Jones with 3 homers.
  • The Tigers have very impressive homerun numbers this year. It's easy to see our lineup is crushing the ball out of the park at high numbers. As of yesterday, the Tigers were 3rd in the MLB and 2nd in the AL in homers. But when you step back and see how balanced the homerun attack is, it's pretty amazing: Ordonez and Inge have 15, Shelton and Thames have 14, Monroe has 11, Granderson has 10. That's 6 players in double digits. And Carlos Guillen has 9. Very fun baseball to watch.
42,000 fans packed Comerica Park tonight. The Cardinals are a good draw, especially with Pujols in the lineup, but it's just great to see the city of Detroit embracing this baseball team and packing the stands. Hope the fans keep coming out and this team keeps playing winning baseball.
