Virgil Vasquez (0-1, 20.25) vs.
Gavin Floyd (0-1, 9.53), 8:11 p.m. EST
The first game of today's day-night doubleheader was pretty much a Home Run Derby contest, with four balls going out of the park. Unfortunately, Jeremy Bonderman served up a two-run homer to Paul Konerko when it counted the most, and the Tigers ended up losing, 5-3.
For the nightcap, it's a battle of emergency call-ups in the nightcap, with Gavin Floyd going for the White Sox and Virgil Vasquez getting another shot with the Tigers. It's difficult to imagine Vasquez doing worse than he did in his start vs. Minnesota back in May, and he'll be pitching against more of a "B" lineup because of the doubleheader, so hopefully his second chance in the majors goes more smoothly (and lasts much longer). If it's any consolation, Floyd was terrible in his lone major league start this season too, giving up six runs (and four home runs) in 5 2/3 innings.
To clear a spot for Vasquez on the major league roster, Jose Capellan was sent down to Toledo. But Vasquez will rejoin the Mud Hens after tonight's game, which will allow the Tigers to activate Tim Byrdak from the disabled list.
