Jason Beck is reporting that reliever Fernando Rodney will be on the disabled list when the Tigers open their season March 31. The decision was made after another bullpen session didn't go as Rodney and the Tigers' coaches were hoping.
(On Saturday, pitching coach Chuck Hernandez said that Rodney probably hadn't regained enough strength in his shoulder to reach full velocity.)
Joining Rodney on the DL on Opening Day will be Vance Wilson, Joel Zumaya, and Jordan Tata.
UPDATE: Beck elaborated in a longer article for MLB.com. Even if Rodney's bullpen session had gone well, his lack of work - throwing all of his pitches from the mound, facing opposing hitters, etc. - during the spring probably would've kept him out of the Opening Day lineup.
