Armando Galarraga (3-6, 5.31) vs.
Clayton Richard (2-1, 3.97), 2:05 p.m. EST
We're playing two today, as the Tigers and White Sox begin a five-game series at U.S. Cellular Field. Detroit currently has a 4.5 game lead over the third-place White Sox in the AL Central. The second game of the doubleheader will be played at 8:11 p.m. EST.
Armando Galarraga is winless in his last seven starts, taking six losses during that span. But he seems to be making small steps of improvement, and would certainly have benefited from better run support in his last three games. Galarraga is 1-2 with a 5.11 ERA against the White Sox in three career appearances (two starts). Both of those losses came at U.S. Cellular Field, where he's given up seven runs in six innings.
Clayton Richard has pitched well in three of his past four starts, but it was in his last game that he got knocked around. Against the A's, Richard allowed five runs, seven hits (three of them home runs), and four walks in 5.1 innings. He pitched 0.1 of an inning versus the Tigers earlier this season, giving up two hits.
Miguel Cabrera is in the starting lineup. Jim Leyland says they'll see how Miggy does in this first game before deciding whether or not he'll play tonight. According to Jason Beck, Cabrera insists that his hamstring feels better when he plays in the field, which is why he's not the designated hitter.
